Nassau to the Family Islands: Bahamian dollars, mailboats and water taxis, and eSIM data that travels better than a BTC kiosk stop.
Sichere, effektive und private eSIMs auf der ganzen Welt
Nassau and Paradise Island are the cruise-and-resort door. The trip people remember is a Family Island: the Exumas' water and the swimming pigs near Staniel Cay, Harbour Island's pink sand and golf carts, Eleuthera's long skinny roads, or Andros if you came to dive. Bahamasair, charter hops, mailboats, and Bahamas Ferries are the real geography — not a single island you can Uber across.
The Bahamian dollar (BSD) sits at par with the US dollar; USD is everyday cash. English is official; Bahamian dialect is what you hear on the dock. Eat conch — cracked, salad, fritters — and johnnycake; Junkanoo is the Boxing Day and New Year's parade clock, not a Saturday dinner show you can book like a luau.
Lynden Pindling (NAS) is the hub. BTC and Aliv cover New Providence more thickly than a mailboat stop on a thin cay. An eSIM live at immigration means the water-taxi pin, the Tropic Air-style hop confirmation, and the Harbour Island golf-cart shop are not a hunt for a BTC desk behind a cruise-ship day.

If you only stay on Cable Beach you have visited a resort strip. Book the Exuma or Harbour Island hop with a weather buffer. Treating the Bahamas like one island with a metro is the Florida mistake.
They run on island time and freight. Bring cash, patience, and offline entertainment. If you need a clockwork catamaran, look at Bahamas Ferries or fly.
You land at North Eleuthera and boat across. The pink sand is Dunmore Town, not a Nassau taxi. Renting a car 'for the Bahamas' is a New Providence plan.
Cracked conch, conch salad, and fritters are the tell. If the menu only speaks generic Caribbean jerk, you are in a cruise loop. Ask where the fisherman landed this morning.
Boxing Day and New Year's in Nassau are the real parades. A Tuesday 'cultural show' is not the same event. If you came for Junkanoo, you came for those nights.

Bahamas Ferries to Harbour Island and Spanish Wells start under the Paradise Island bridge. A hotel taxi that says 'the ferry' without that name can deliver you to the wrong piece of waterfront.

Except for the short Spanish Wells–Harbour Island link, the fast-ferry map is Nassau outward. Five days is one Family Island plus a Nassau night, not a circuit you stitch together from island to island.

Over water you may lose the tower. That is normal. Have the booking offline and pick up BTC or Aliv again in the settlement. Do not stream a map in the middle of the bank.
Airport desks exist and get cruise-and-holiday queues. An eSIM installed at home is online for the taxi and the ferry pin. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20 and newer skip the kiosk.
Settlements have service; it is not Nassau. Download maps and the golf-cart shop number. A bar of 4G on Bay Street does not promise the same on a thin cay.
USD works almost everywhere at par. Small BSD notes still help with jitneys and docks. You are not in an XCD-only rum shop economy, but docks like exact change.
Not on a single-country Bahamas plan. Those are different networks. If the itinerary includes a US connection day, keep home roaming off and use Wi-Fi or a US plan for that leg.
eSIM-Tarife
Lynden Pindling after a US connection is immigration and a taxi, not a relaxing BTC education. Install an eSIM before you fly so the Paradise Island water taxi and the Family Island hop are on the phone in the hall.
BTC and Aliv shops in Nassau can add a local number later. For an Exuma or Harbour Island week, prepaid data that works when the tower does — and offline maps when it does not — is the piece you want before you leave home.
