Douala and Yaoundé are not interchangeable
One is a port that cooks. The other is a hill capital. Fly between them if your week is short. The road is a story people tell after they have already suffered it.
Douala port heat and Yaoundé hills: XAF cash, French and English on paper, Yango, Mount Cameroon weather, and city 4G.
Secure, effective and private eSIMs across the globe
Cameroon calls itself Africa in miniature because the map really does run from mangrove and cocoa to highland grass and Sahel. Most visitors still live on one axis: Douala's port heat, Yaoundé's ministries in the hills, and the coast at Limbe or Kribi when they want the Atlantic. The far north and some western highlands are different logistics. Build the week around the cities you can actually sequence, not a slogan.
French dominates Douala and Yaoundé. English is official too and is the street language in parts of the northwest and southwest — which is not the same as 'everyone in the airport speaks both.' Start in French in Douala. Eat ndolé, grilled fish in Limbe, and brochettes at night when the rain pauses. Yango and a trusted driver beat improvising a shared taxi after dark with luggage.
Mount Cameroon is a climb with weather that changes its mind. The wet season is a wall of water on the coast. Harmattan dust reaches down from the north in the dry months. XAF cash runs the marché. Domestic flights save you from the long rain-ruined road. Check current advice for the regions you are not flying over as a tourist daydream.

Bilingual on paper is not bilingual in a tired arrivals hall. Bonjour first. English can follow. The attitude change is immediate.
Black sand, grilled fish, a cooler breeze. It is not Kribi, and it does not need to be. Go for the afternoon and leave the mountain for people with a guide and a weather window.
Street taxis are a negotiation. The app fare is a number. Keep small CFA for the stall that will never see a card.
Cloud, rain and altitude. Go with a local guide who has a recent window, not a pair of city sneakers and a blog time estimate.

Shared cabs pick up extra riders and the fare doubles the moment you look like a visitor. People who know the city charter the car, use a hotel driver, and check the driver is sober before the door closes. Street-hailed taxis are the risk, not the idea of a taxi.

Purse snatches and ripped chains happen on Akwa’s busy streets and even inside a supermarket. Leave the watch in the room and walk that quarter without a dangling bag. If you need official help, look for gendarmes in red berets rather than a private guard truck.

On paper, yes. At a tired arrivals desk, start in French. English is stronger in parts of the northwest and southwest, not as a default in the port city.
Yango if you have data. The pin and the fare are a number. Unlocked iPhone XS, Pixel 3 or Galaxy S20+ can run that on a Cameroon eSIM from the hall.
You can, with a passport, in the humidity. An eSIM skips the queue and has the Yaoundé flight app already open.
Limbe and Buea town are usually fine. The mountain is weather and altitude, not a network. Download maps and go with a guide who has a recent window.
Only if the plan lists those countries. Douala is a hub. A Cameroon-only plan is not a regional pass.
eSIM plans
Douala traffic and a Yango pin are the first problem after a long-haul. A Cameroon eSIM is online so you are not buying a passport-registered SIM in the humidity queue.
Install it before you fly. City 4G carries WhatsApp, maps and the domestic-airline app. Download offline maps if you leave the Douala–Yaoundé–coast line — coverage is a city product.
