Eat sticky rice with your fingers, order laap that actually has herbs in it, and drink the local beer on a plastic stool facing the river. Temples expect covered shoulders and knees; a sarong in the day bag is not optional in Luang Prabang.
A first trip that works is Vientiane, the train or the winding road to Vang Vieng, then Luang Prabang — and only then a slow boat or a flight if you are heading toward the north or the 4,000 Islands. Laos rewards the traveler who stops treating it as a cheap corridor between Thailand and Vietnam.
