Oman is a harbour corniche that still feels like a working port, a fort on a hill of date palms, and a wadi pool you hike into with shoes you will ruin. Muscat is Mutrah, the Grand Mosque, and a city spread so wide that 'just down the road' is a lie. Nizwa is the Friday goat market and a brown castle. Jebel Shams is the drop. Wahiba is the dune you should not drive without a clue. Salalah, in the khareef, is a green surprise when the rest of the Gulf is a furnace.
The rial (OMR) is a high-value currency — notes feel like they should be framed. Cards work in the capital; cash still appears in a mountain village. Type G sockets, UK-style. Arabic is the door; English is common in hotels and many restaurants. Dress modestly in towns. Alcohol is a licensed-venue product, not a supermarket sport.
October to April is the season most visitors want. Summer inland is extreme. Salalah's June–September mist is the exception that has its own flight prices and its own crowds. A car is not optional outside Muscat — there is no passenger railway to save you.
A first trip is Muscat plus Nizwa and one wadi, or Muscat plus the mountains. Do not stack Empty Quarter camping, a turtle beach and a Salalah week into nine days. Oman is distances and heat. It rewards the slow drive.

Start early, wear shoes that can get wet, and do the keyhole swim if conditions are sane. Midday in season is a queue in a canyon. Carry out what you carried in.
Go for the goat auction energy, then the fort. Dress like a guest. The cattle are not a petting zoo and the dust is part of the ticket.
Edges, wind, and a drop that does not care. Stay on the path, start early, and turn around if the cloud sits on the canyon. The hotel is the reward, not the last metre of cliff.
Soft sand punishes a 2WD and a confident first-timer. Go with a camp that knows the tracks, deflate if they say so, and do not chase a drone line into a bowl.
The corniche and the souq at midday are heat and tour groups. Walk early, drink karak, and save the harbour photos for when the light goes copper.

The approach towns and some ridge hotels are fine. Canyon bottoms and the rim trail are not a promise. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20+ take the eSIM in Muscat; screenshot the hike before you park.
Navigation is the eater: 1–2 GB a day if the phone is the only map, so 10–15 GB for ten days. Offline maps for wadi days cut that down.
