Alps, lakes and trains: costs and money, transport passes, when to visit, curated traveler tips, and affordable mobile data via eSIM.
Secure, effective and private eSIMs across the globe
Switzerland looks exactly like the pictures: turquoise lakes under snow peaks, trains gliding past impossible scenery, and villages like Wengen and Zermatt where cars barely exist. The Bernese Oberland, Lake Lucerne and the Matterhorn form the classic circuit.
It is famously expensive, but the trick is knowing where the money goes: transport passes tame the biggest cost, supermarket picnics with a view beat mediocre restaurants, and the best experiences - hiking trails, lake swims, village wandering - are free.
The trains are the attraction. A window seat on the Bernina, the GoldenPass or a humble regional up a valley will outdo a lot of 'experiences' you can buy. Walk out of the station, pick a marked trail, and eat a supermarket picnic on a bench that looks like a painting. That is the Swiss trick: the expensive country with a free front row.
Base in one valley — Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Zermatt or the Engadin — and day-trip from there. Changing hotels every night in Switzerland is how you spend the Alps on luggage carousels.

Traveler tips
Real advice from people who have been to Switzerland, curated by our team with links to the original sources.
Individual Swiss train tickets are brutal - a single mountain excursion can cost over 100 francs. Price your route against the Swiss Travel Pass and the Half Fare Card before buying anything; one of them almost always wins.
Migros and Coop supermarkets sell good bread, cheese and wine for a fraction of restaurant prices. A bench with a lake-and-Alps view turns a 15-franc picnic into the best meal of the trip.
Paying 80+ francs to ride up Jungfraujoch or Pilatus into a cloud bank hurts. Every major peak has live webcams - check them in the morning and go on the clear day, keeping your itinerary flexible.
If you are not riding enough for a Swiss Travel Pass, the Half Fare Card still cuts most trains, boats and mountain lifts in half and often wins on a week of mixed travel. Run the numbers on the SBB site before you buy anything at the window.
Fill the bottle at the station, in the village, on the trail. Unless a fountain says otherwise, it is drinking water, and it is better than what you pay for in most of Europe. This is the one place the 'bring a bottle' advice feels like a gift.

The pass only knocks a quarter off the climb above Wengen and Grindelwald. A Half Fare Card cuts that expensive stretch in half, which is why people run the numbers for this mountain.

Geneva and several other Swiss cities give overnight guests local transport. Zurich does not; the Zürich Card is a paid product, so budget a ticket from the airport instead of expecting a complimentary pass at check-in.

A Swiss Travel Pass feels unlimited until you price the Jungfraujoch or Gornergrat. Those top mountain railways are only partly covered — often a quarter off — while a Half Fare Card cuts the same ticket in half. If your week is two summit days and a few valley hops, do the SBB price-without-discount exercise first. The pretty pass is not automatically the cheaper mountain.

The panoramic seat is a separate booking even when a pass or Saver Day Pass covers the fare. Buy the reservation early in summer; the window seat is the product. Forum regulars sometimes pair a Half Fare Card with a Saver Day Pass instead of a full Travel Pass. Ordinary InterCity trains still do not need a seat number. This one does.

Usually not - Switzerland is not in the EU, and most EU 'roam like at home' plans exclude it or charge steep per-MB rates there. Check your plan before you travel; this is the single most common billing surprise in Europe, and a Switzerland eSIM is the easy fix.
Usually not — Switzerland is outside the EU roam-like-at-home zone and is the classic surprise bill. Check before you go. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20+ on a Switzerland eSIM keep SBB and summit webcams at local rates.
Train timetables, trail maps and summit webcams are light users - 1 GB per day is enough for most visitors, so 10 GB gives a comfortable margin for a week. Add more if you upload a lot of mountain video.
Remarkably good - Swiss networks cover villages, rail lines and even many summits and ski areas. Only remote high-alpine hiking routes go quiet, and marked trails near lifts and huts usually keep signal.
Tickets can be stored offline, but the SBB app's live platform changes, connection updates and journey re-planning are where it earns its reputation - and those need a connection. Checking peak webcams before committing 80 francs to a summit trip also wants live data.
eSIM plans
Here is the catch EU travelers miss: Switzerland sits outside EU roaming zones, so the fees that vanished elsewhere in Europe come roaring back at the border. A Switzerland eSIM keeps timetables, trail maps and webcams in hand at local rates.
SBB live platforms, summit webcams and a trail map above the treeline: you want data, and your EU plan may not follow you here. An eSIM is the unglamorous fix that keeps a 80-franc mountain day from being a guess.
