Practical logistics: UAH, Ukrzaliznytsia tickets, alert apps, city coverage, and why an eSIM beats a kiosk after a long land arrival.
Secure, effective and private eSIMs across the globe
This page is logistics, not an invitation and not a safety rating. Whether you travel is a decision for you and your government's current advice. Ukrainian airspace has been closed for long stretches; long-distance movement that still happens is often rail. Ukrzaliznytsia tickets live in an app as a QR code. You still show a passport that matches the name on the ticket.
Pay in hryvnia. Cards work in many city shops; keep some cash for small stalls and when a terminal is down. Ukrainian is the language of signs and announcements. Translation on a working phone is a practical tool, not a gimmick. Air-alert apps are how a lot of people get a siren on a lock screen — install what locals tell you to install, and follow official instructions if one sounds.
Curfews, documents and which stations are running change. Check a primary source the morning you move. Eat varenyky and borshch because that is the food, not because a brochure sold you a 'resilient city break.' An eSIM is useful for tickets, maps and messages. It is not a plan for a journey you have not cleared with official advice.

Traveler tips
Real advice from people who have been to Ukraine, curated by our team with links to the original sources.
Buy in the official Ukrzaliznytsia channels when they are available to you. The name must match the document you carry. Screenshot the QR. Some international through-tickets still want paper — read the notice on that booking, not a forum guess.
People use air-alert apps the way other cities use weather warnings. If a siren sounds, follow station or building staff. Do not film, wander, or treat it as content.
Terminals fail. Small shops prefer notes. Official ATMs beat a guy with a calculator. Tell your bank you may see Ukrainian charges.
Carry the passport you entered with. Digital copies help if you lose the physical one; they do not replace it at a control. Rules on movement can change — check official notices, not a Telegram rumour as your only source.
Advisories differ by passport. This guide will not list 'open cities' or invent access. If your advice says do not travel, that sentence outranks any café recommendation.

Curfew in Lviv starts at midnight. Intercity trains still run, but you cannot walk or ride from the platform to a hotel until morning — if the timetable kisses midnight, you sleep in the waiting room.

The Polish train and the Ukrainian train are sold on different sites. Book each leg yourself; a single Kraków-to-Lviv button does not exist, and a late Polish connection can push you into curfew on the other side.

No. Read your government's current travel advice and follow Ukrainian official instructions. This page only covers money, trains, language and connectivity logistics.
Data helps you open the app, show a QR and message a host. You still need the passport that matches the ticket. Unlocked iPhone XS, Pixel 3 or Galaxy S20+ can hold the eSIM. Some bookings need extra verification — that is a railway rule, not an eSIM setting.
Maps, messaging and tickets: about 1–2 GB a day is a working estimate, so 10–15 GB is a calm city stash if you are not hotspotting. Outages happen; screenshots matter more than a live stream.
Physical SIMs often want ID and a shop that is open. An eSIM avoids that queue. If you need a Ukrainian number for SMS, that is a separate, local decision.
Only if the plan lists those countries. Border crossings are a documentation problem first. A country plan dies at the line.
eSIM plans
Land arrivals and long rail days are easier when maps, tickets and messages work without hunting a kiosk that may want local ID you do not have ready. A Ukraine eSIM is data for those errands — not a substitute for official advice.
Install it before you travel if you are already cleared to go. Download the rail QR and an offline map. Coverage is a city tool; it will not narrate a journey you should not be taking.
