Minsk metro, draniki, Belarusian rubles, and eSIM data from Minsk National Airport so Yandex Go works on arrival.
Des eSIMs sûres, efficaces et privées partout dans le monde
Minsk is wide avenues, the Stalinist and post-war centre, a clean metro, and Island of Tears by the Svislach. A first trip that works is the capital plus Mir and Nesvizh castles if you have a day, Brest and the fortress if you have two, and Belovezhskaya Pushcha if you came for the forest — not a sprint that treats the country as a corridor to somewhere else.
The ruble (BYN) is what marshrutkas and draniki cafes take. Cards work in Minsk more than visitors expect; some Western cards and apps still fail, so a backup card and cash matter. Russian is the language of the metro and most menus; Belarusian appears on signs and in the west. Yandex Go is the taxi app that actually opens. Eat draniki, machanka, and kholodnik in summer; kvass from a street tank is the warm-month drink.
Minsk National Airport (MSQ) is far enough from the centre that the train or a Yandex pin is the first real task. A1, MTS, and life:) run city 4G that is perfectly usable for maps. An eSIM live after immigration means the metro diagram and the hotel on Nezalezhnasti are not a kiosk errand. Check current entry rules on an official page before you fly — do not borrow a visa price from a comment thread.

Minsk runs on Yandex Go. Standing outside MSQ waiting for an app that never launched is the wrong arrival. Have it installed and a payment method that actually works.
Minsk's metro is clean, cheap in local terms, and how you avoid the avenues at rush hour. Treating the city as taxi-only is a Baku-without-BakiKart mistake in a different alphabet.
Potato pancakes with sour cream or machanka. A generic 'Soviet dumpling' menu is the tourist loop. Kholodnik in summer is the other local clock.
The two castles pair from Minsk. The primeval forest needs its own night or a long Brest plan. Combining all three is a dashboard day.
Some familiar apps and sites are flaky. That is a logistics note, not a thriller. Offline maps, a screenshot of the train, and a local taxi app are the kit.

Cards issued abroad do not settle at every Belarusian bank. Travellers who still withdraw do it at an unsanctioned machine and keep dollars or euros to change on the street. Treat a working foreign card as luck, not a plan.

The Minsk bus is the easy part. People report the long wait on the Lithuanian side, especially at Kamenny Log, while smaller checkpoints move faster. Use the lockers at Vilnius station and do not schedule a same-evening dinner in Minsk off a daytime coach.

Yandex Go is the ride app that locals use. Some Western maps and services are slower or blocked. Download offline maps and your hotel address in Russian before you land. Data still matters; the brand of app may change.
Airport desks may exist and may want local paperwork. An eSIM installed at home is online for Yandex Go and the train. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20 and newer skip that counter. Add A1 or MTS in the city only if you need a Belarusian number.
Cities and the main roads to Brest and the castles are generally fine. Belovezhskaya Pushcha and some rural belts dip. Download maps before you leave the last town.
Some foreign cards work in Minsk; some do not. Carry a backup card and BYN cash. That is payment logistics, not a reason to skip ATMs inside banks. Data helps you find the next machine.
Not on a single-country Belarus plan. Those are different networks and different entry rules. Check each border on official pages and buy a plan that lists every country you will actually enter.
Forfaits eSIM
Minsk National Airport is a long transfer from Nezalezhnasti Avenue. Install an eSIM before you fly so Yandex Go, the airport train timetable, and the hotel pin work after immigration — without a kiosk that may not match your language or card.
A1 and MTS shops in the city can add a local number later if you need Belarusian SMS. For a week of metro rides and a Mir day, prepaid data already on the phone is the quieter start. Confirm current entry rules on an official source; do not copy a visa price from a chat.
