Willemstad's Handelskade: guilders and dollars, Papiamentu, 127V Type A, Klein Curaçao boats, and data for a rental-car island.
Des eSIMs sûres, efficaces et privées partout dans le monde
Curaçao is the Dutch Caribbean island that looks like a paint box from the Queen Emma bridge: Handelskade's gables, Punda on one side, Otrobanda on the other, and Papiamentu in the air with Dutch, English and Spanish close behind. It is a country within the Kingdom, not a suburb of Aruba, and it sits outside the hurricane belt more often than its neighbours — which is why people winter here.
Willemstad is a walking old town and a working harbour. The rest of the island wants a car: west-end beaches, the Shete Boka coast, and the drive to a snorkel cove that is not in front of your hotel. Klein Curaçao is an uninhabited limestone speck you reach by boat — bring shade and more water than the brochure implies. Playa Kenepa and Cas Abao are the postcard bays; they fill when the cruise ships are in.
The Netherlands Antillean guilder and the US dollar both spend. Cards are normal in Willemstad. Beach snack bars may still want cash. Electricity is about 127V with Type A sockets, plus the odd European outlet in a Dutch-built hotel. Tap water is desalinated and one of the reasons residents brag. Curaçao liqueur is a souvenir. Keshi yena is dinner. Do not treat the island as a Willemstad weekend with a beach attached — the driving days are the trip.

Conseils de voyageurs
De vrais conseils de personnes qui sont allées en Curaçao, sélectionnés par notre équipe avec des liens vers les sources d'origine.
Punda does not need a vehicle. Kenepa, Shete Boka and a sunset at Westpunt do. Book the car before a cruise-heavy week.
Shade, water, reef-safe sunscreen, and a boat you trust. There is no café to fix a bad packing list. The wreck and the lighthouse are the scenery.
Both spend. Watch the till so you are not paying a lazy rate twice. Small guilder notes help at beach bars.
Papiamentu greetings are short and they work. Starting in English is fine. Starting without a hello is the thing that feels rude.
If you wanted the coloured gables without a thousand lanyards, walk them early or after the ships have gone. Otrobanda is quieter the same hour.

Forum regulars skip the airport majors and use island firms that deliver to Jan Thiel or Westpunt. A little extra clearance helps the smaller beach tracks; a tiny hatchback is easier in Willemstad. Reserve early — the good local fleets go first.

Willemstad’s two sides, Punda and Otrobanda, are joined by a pontoon bridge that opens for harbour traffic. Walking it and waiting for it to close is the town ritual. On the drive, rotary yield rules change from one circle to the next, and wet roads are slick.

Punda and Otrobanda walk. Kenepa, Shete Boka and Westpunt want a car. Maps from CUR arrivals are why the eSIM matters on day one.
You can buy one. An eSIM has the rental-car exit and the Klein Curaçao operator's WhatsApp already live.
Willemstad is fine. The crossing and the island are not a promise. Screenshot the return time and keep an offline map.
Only if the plan lists those islands. The ABC grouping is geography. The plan list is a contract.
Forfaits eSIM
A rental car on an island without a metro means maps from the CUR arrivals kerb. A Curaçao eSIM is online so Willemstad and the west-end beaches are a route, not a hunt for airport Wi-Fi.
Install it before you fly. WhatsApp is how boat operators confirm Klein Curaçao. Town 4G is enough. Download an offline map for the north coast coves where the signal thins.
