Morocco Travel Guide: Essentials, Local Tips & Mobile Data

Marrakech, the medina and the mountains: money, haggling, trains, when to go, traveler tips, and mobile data via eSIM.

Morocco

Morocco hits the senses first: spice in the medina air, a call to prayer over rooftops, a tagine lid lifting, and a blue alley in Chefchaouen that looks invented. Marrakech is the gateway and the chaos. Fes is older and deeper. The Atlas and the desert are why people extend the ticket.

It is a country of hospitality and of hustle, often in the same five minutes. Learn a few words of Darija or French, drink the mint tea, and treat the first price as the opening of a conversation, not an insult. Humor travels further than suspicion.

Trains between the imperial cities are comfortable and cheap. The mountains and the Sahara want a driver or a tour you chose, not one that found you. Give Marrakech three nights, then leave it — the trip starts when the walls are behind you.

Eat with bread, accept the extra pastry, and do not rush a riad courtyard. Morocco is a place that looks like a postcard and feels like a negotiation, in the best sense: you meet it halfway, and it meets you back.

基礎知識

Morocco の旅の基礎知識

通貨
Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Cash still rules in medinas; cards at riads and nicer restaurants. ATMs are easy in cities.
言語
Arabic and Amazigh; French is widely spoken. English is common in tourist jobs, thinner elsewhere.
コンセント
Type C / E, 220V.
緊急番号
19 (police), 15 (ambulance)
ベストシーズン
March to May and September to November. Summer is brutal in Marrakech and the desert; winter is fine in cities and cold at night in the Sahara.
チップ
Small and frequent: a few dirhams for tea, 10% in restaurants, a little extra for drivers and guides.
タイムゾーン
WEST (UTC+1), with Ramadan schedule changes that can shift opening hours more than the clock.
水道水
Stick to bottled water. Ice at reputable places is usually fine.
移動手段
ONCF trains link Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Marrakech. Grands taxis and hired drivers cover the rest. In cities, use Careem or a petit taxi with the meter.
インターネットとカバー範囲
Good 4G in cities and along the train line; weaker in the High Atlas and deep desert. Medina Wi-Fi is a mood, not a plan.

The 'this way is closed' trick is still alive

A friendly stranger who says the square is that way, the souk is closed, or your riad moved is steering you toward a shop. Thank them, do not follow, and use the map pin your host sent. Official guides have badges; random helpers have commissions.

Haggle with a smile or walk

In souks, the first price is a conversation starter. Offer less, laugh, walk away. In supermarkets, pharmacies and train stations, the price is the price. Knowing the difference is the whole game.

Hire a driver for the Atlas and the desert

A private car for a few days is cheaper split two ways than a rushed group tour, and you control the stops. Agree the itinerary and price in the morning, not at midnight in a parking lot.

Dress for respect, not for a rulebook

Morocco is not a beach resort with a medina attached. Cover shoulders and knees in cities and villages, especially outside Marrakech's tourist core. You will be more comfortable, and so will everyone around you.

Night trains and early trains beat the heat

Marrakech to Fes is a long, fine rail day if you start early. In summer, do the medina at dawn and dusk and hide at midday. The country was not designed for noon sightseeing in August.

よくある質問

Morocco の旅の疑問に答える

Does my phone support eSIM in Morocco?

Unlocked iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, and Galaxy S20 and newer all support eSIM and work on Morocco's networks.

How much data do I need for ten days in Morocco?

Maps in the medina, Careem and translation run about 1–2 GB a day, so 10–15 GB covers a typical imperial-cities trip. Upload-heavy desert photo days push you toward 20 GB.

Is there mobile coverage in the Sahara and the Atlas?

Towns and the main roads are fine. High passes, remote kasbahs and the dunes themselves drop out. Download offline maps and your driver's number before you leave cell range.

Should I buy a SIM at Marrakech airport?

The desks exist, they want your passport, and the queue is a poor first impression of Morocco. An eSIM installed at home has your riad pin working in arrivals.

Do I need a VPN in Morocco?

No — WhatsApp, Google Maps, Instagram and the usual tools work normally. Morocco is not China. You want data for maps and rides, not a workaround.

eSIM プラン

Morocco でつながる

Medina alleys eat paper maps. A pin from your riad, a Careem ride and a train ticket on ONCF all want data. An eSIM means you land in Marrakech or Casablanca already able to find the door — which, in a medina, is the whole battle.

Local SIMs are cheap and require your passport. The eSIM is for people who would rather drink the first mint tea than stand at a kiosk after a flight.
