Antigua cobbles, Atitlán lanchas, Tikal, quetzales, and data for tourist shuttles when chicken buses will not wait.
Guatemala is a country you feel in the knees: cobbles in Antigua, a lancha that slaps across Lake Atitlán, and a dawn walk at Tikal when the howler monkeys start before the tour groups. Volcanoes sit in every postcard for a reason. The highlands speak Spanish and a map of Mayan languages that will humble anyone who packed one phrasebook.
Eat pepian, kak'ik or whatever the comedor is actually cooking that day. Market days in Chichicastenango are a colour you cannot photograph honestly. The tourist shuttle is how most visitors move between Antigua, Panajachel and Flores. The chicken bus — a recycled US school bus in a paint job — is the country's real circulatory system, louder and cheaper and not a romance if you have a hard case.
A first trip is Antigua plus the lake, or the lake plus Tikal if you can stand the extra flight or the long road to Flores. Do not try to collect every pueblo in ten days. The country rewards a week in one basin more than a highlight reel that only sees the inside of a van.

Give it three nights for the ruins, the volcano view and a coffee finca. Then leave. The lake and Tikal are different climates and different moods. People who only see the arch regret the van they did not take.
Panajachel, San Pedro, San Marcos and San Juan are not interchangeable. Confirm which dock and which last boat. Afternoon wind on Atitlán is a schedule, not a surprise.
Know the destination painted on the windscreen, keep your bag where you can see it, and shout when you want off. If that sounds like work, the tourist shuttle is the product designed for you.
Stay in Flores or El Remate, not a same-day sprint from the lake. Temple IV at first light is the point. Midday heat in Petén is a different sport.
Markets and boats are cash. The shuttle WhatsApp is data. Withdraw from a bank ATM, decline the machine's conversion, and download the village map before the ridge.

Tikal sits a full day's road from Antigua and Atitlán. Regulars book the short hop to Flores, then the hour to the park, instead of adding a ten-hour bus between the highlands and the jungle.

The ridge walk is a pack, a hired guide, and a night watching Fuego, not a casual Antigua afternoon. Hotels will tell you the recent trail news; do not start it in the dark without that local check.

Lake towns are usually fine near the dock. Crossings and some hillside hostels dip. Tikal has patches near the entrance and long quiet stretches on the trails — download the park map.
You can, after a queue. An eSIM at home has the shuttle chat and the Antigua pin working in arrivals.
Drivers coordinate on WhatsApp. If your pickup moves by twenty minutes, you want that message, not a rumour at the hostel desk.
Only if Guatemala is on the list. Country-only Mexico plans die at the border. Read the catalogue, do not assume the isthmus is one network.
Maps, chats and a few photo days: think in daily map-and-message use, not streaming. Size up if you hotspot a laptop on a long work stay.

Shuttle WhatsApps, a lancha timetable and a pin for a hostel up a cobbled street all want data when you leave La Aurora. A Guatemala eSIM is online after immigration without a mall errand for a Tigo counter.
Install it before you fly. The first useful thing it does is find the shuttle bay, not the airport Wi-Fi password on a pillar.
