Shoal Bay after the St. Maarten ferry or Clayton J. Lloyd hop: East Caribbean dollars, English, and eSIM data on a small island.
Veilige, effectieve en privé eSIMs over de hele wereld
Anguilla is a low limestone island of long beaches — Shoal Bay East, Meads Bay, Rendezvous — and almost no 'just land from Europe' story. Most people fly into Princess Juliana (SXM) on Sint Maarten, take a taxi to Marigot, and ride the ferry to Blowing Point. The short hop into Clayton J. Lloyd (AXA) exists; it is not how the majority of visitors arrive.
English is official, the East Caribbean dollar (XCD) is the currency, and US dollars are widely taken at hotels. The Valley is the quiet administrative centre, not a nightlife strip. Prickly Pear Cay is a boat day, not a taxi. Eat grilled crayfish and johnnycakes; this is not a jerk-chicken-and-reggae template you can paste from Jamaica.
Flow and Digicel are the towers. The island is small enough that a dead zone is usually a cove or a boat, not a province. You want data before the ferry leaves Marigot so the Blowing Point taxi and the villa gate code are on the phone, not after you discover the kiosk closed because the last flight from SXM was yesterday.

Building the trip around Clayton J. Lloyd as if it were a jet hub is how you miss the last Blowing Point boat. Watch the ferry clock the way other islands watch a last metro.
It is a long, relatively undeveloped crescent. You go for the water, not for a row of duty-free. If you wanted that, you stayed on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten.
Villas and hotels will take US dollars. The roadside stall and some taxis still think in East Caribbean dollars. Keep both, and do not dump all your change as if this were a USD-only island like the Bahamas.
You book a local boat. There is no coastal walk that substitutes. Treating it like a cay you reach in flip-flops from town is a Belize-caye mix-up.
Groceries and government desks are daytime. Night is restaurants and villas. If you need a SIM desk or a pharmacy, do it before the last ferry stories start.

Once you land at Blowing Point, the useful first question is which shore is in the lee today. Meads, Rendezvous, and Shoal Bay West sit on different exposures; a calm lunch beach on one side can be a choppy shore on the other. The driver already knows.

Anguilla has real junctions, dust, and traffic, not a golf-cart lane. Regulars take a small four-door over a low Moke because visibility and ground clearance matter more than the photo. Count the roundabouts on the Skyviews map before you leave Meads for Island Harbour.

Yes. You want maps and the villa chat on the Marigot–Blowing Point crossing and the minute you land on Anguilla. Waiting for a kiosk in The Valley after the last counter closes is a real way to spend the first evening offline.
Only if the plan lists both territories. SXM and Marigot are a different country (and a French/Dutch split). A single-country Anguilla profile can go quiet the moment you are back on the ferry.
The inhabited roads and main beaches are fine on Flow or Digicel. Boat trips and a few coves are not. Download offline maps. Unlocked eSIM phones (iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20 and newer) avoid hunting a shop on a Sunday.
For resorts, USD is often enough. For taxis, rum shops, and small groceries, East Caribbean dollars still matter. Data finds the ATM in The Valley; it does not replace the notes.
The airport is small and hours follow the flight schedule. Do not build the trip around that desk. An eSIM installed before SXM is the reliable path; add a local SIM in The Valley only if you need an Anguillian number.

The useful moment is the Marigot dock or Clayton J. Lloyd's small arrivals room — not a mega-hub SIM hall. Install an eSIM before you fly into SXM so the ferry confirmation and the Blowing Point taxi work while you still have a bag on your shoulder.
Flow and Digicel shops in The Valley exist if you want a local number later. For a week of Shoal Bay and Meads, prepaid data already on the phone is enough to skip that extra errand.
