Lahore to Hunza: rupees, Type C/D plugs, mountain seasons, traveler tips, and mobile data via eSIM.
Veilige, effectieve en privé eSIMs over de hele wereld
Pakistan is a Mughal courtyard in Lahore, a planned capital in Islamabad, a Karachi that does not care whether you expected to like it, and a north that looks like someone folded the Alps and then added apricot orchards. The hospitality is not a slogan — it is tea you did not order and a family that will not let you pay for the whole table. The distances are the other truth. The Karakoram Highway is a trip, not a scenic afternoon from the airport.
The rupee is cash in a lot of mountain places that never met a tap machine. Type C and D sockets, 230V. Urdu and English open doors in cities; the valleys have their own languages. Eat nihari in Lahore, a bun kebab on a street you were walked to, trout in the north, and fruit that tastes like it grew in the next field because it did.
Cities work in the cooler months (roughly October–April). Hunza, Fairy Meadows and the high passes want late spring through early autumn — snow and landslides keep their own calendar. Domestic flights save the brutal road days. Buses and Daewoo-style coaches fill the rest.
A first trip is often Lahore plus Islamabad, or Islamabad plus Hunza if the season is right. Do not stack Karachi, the deserts and K2 base camp into one jet-lagged sprint. Pakistan is better when you pick a story and stay in it.

Walled City walks, Badshahi at a quiet hour, and a nihari that is not in a hotel. The hospitality will try to feed you twice. Say yes once, then walk it off in the bazaar.
Apricot blossom and autumn colour are real and dated. Winter closes more than cafés. Check the road and the pass before you treat Karimabad as a weekend from ISB.
The last stretch is a road people tell stories about. Go with a driver who does it for a living, start early, and do not freelance the cliff in the dark.
Lahore and Islamabad are not a beach. Cover shoulders and knees in towns and shrines. The north is more relaxed on the trail and still conservative in villages.
If someone invites you in, that is the day. A rushed 'we have a site to tick' is how you miss the country that actually exists between the monuments.

The highway from Islamabad is a multi-day change of mountains, not a scenic afternoon. Regulars take the flight up and the road down — or the reverse — so they are not repeating the Indus gorge twice.

The greener Naran crossing usually opens toward the end of May. The Besham–Chilas line is the all-weather alternative, bumpier where the dam work sits, and monsoon slides near Chilas can still stop the ground link to Gilgit.

Towns along the highway have pockets. Long canyon stretches, landslide zones and Fairy Meadows are often empty. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20+ take the eSIM in the cities; screenshot the guesthouse before Gilgit.
City days: 1–2 GB. Mountain days may use almost none. A 15–20 GB plan is a comfortable shape for Lahore–Islamabad–Hunza if you are not uploading every peak at dinner.
Possible, with ID, and sometimes a queue. An eSIM skips the desk for a short visit. Longer stays in the north sometimes still add a local prepaid for the towers tea houses actually see.
No. Country plans stop at the border. The Khunjerab or Wagah-adjacent maps are not a roaming pass. Read the list.
Karachi is a real city with food and a sea breeze, not a consolation prize. It also wants more planning than a stroll. Many first cultural trips start in Lahore. Data helps either city — the question is which story you booked.
eSIM-bundels
A Careem pin through a Lahore neighbourhood without numbers, a coach that moved platforms, and a message to the Hunza guesthouse that only speaks in WhatsApp: Pakistan wants data from LHE or ISB. An eSIM is online in arrivals without a registration desk that wants more photocopies than your patience.
Install it before you fly, then download the KKH map anyway. The valley will take the signal. The tea will not require a bar of 4G.
