El Yunque is a reservation, not a pull-over
Timed entry exists for a reason. Book the official slot, go early, and wear shoes that can get wet. The roadside waterfall on the way is not the forest.
A US territory in the Caribbean: dollars, 911, rainforest and bioluminescent bays, traveler tips, and mobile data via eSIM.
Veilige, effectieve en privé eSIMs over de hele wereld
Puerto Rico is a US territory that still feels like a country: Spanish in the street, dollars in the till, 911 in an emergency, and a cobbled old city that has been holding the harbour since the Spanish empire needed a vault. Old San Juan is the walk. El Yunque is the rainforest you can reach with a reservation. The bioluminescent bays — Mosquito on Vieques, Laguna Grande in Fajardo — are the night you will try to photograph and fail, correctly.
Plugs are Type A/B at 120V. Tipping is US-style. Eat mofongo, a mallorca at breakfast, lechón if you drive toward Guavate, and coffee that does not come from a chain. Hurricane season (June–November) is a real calendar. December to April is the drier, busier window.
Uber works in the San Juan basin. The rest of the island wants a car: Rincón's swell, Ponce's plaza, the ferry to Vieques or Culebra. There is no useful intercity rail. English is widely understood in tourism; Spanish is still the island.
A first trip is San Juan plus El Yunque plus one other note — a west-coast surf town or a bio bay. Trying to add every island municipality in a week is how you collect ferries. Stay long enough to have a favorite alcapurria stall.

Cruise mornings fill the alleys. Walk the walls at opening, eat a mallorca, and spend the evening where residents actually sit. The colourful houses will still be there after coffee.
Darker nights are brighter water. Vieques' Mosquito Bay is the famous one and a ferry-plus-plan. Laguna Grande is the easier Fajardo version. Do not wear insect-repellent sunscreen into the water if the operator says not to.
The Guavate / Cayey stretch is smoke, music and a tray. Go hungry, share, and do not treat it as a 20-minute photo stop from the Condado pool.
Rincón and the northwest want a car and a few nights. Treating them as a day trip from SJU is how you meet traffic and a sunset you watched from the highway.

The east-coast food strip sits minutes from the rainforest gate. Regulars do the trails, then eat there, instead of driving back to Condado hungry or adding Guavate on the same looping day.

In Old San Juan you order mashed plantain stuffed with seafood or meat. The mountain Sunday tray adds arroz con gandules and pasteles — a different meal in a different parish.

Many US postpaid plans include Puerto Rico as domestic. Prepaid and most overseas plans do not. If you are not sure, an eSIM is the clean visitor fix. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20+ can hold it.
The approach roads and towns are often fine. Trails, some mountain ridges and parts of the outer islands drop out. Screenshot the reservation and the ferry before you lose the bars.
Uber, maps and a lot of colourful-balcony photos: 1–2 GB a day, so about 10 GB for a San Juan–plus-rainforest week.
You can. An eSIM means the first Uber is a tap. This is a US-style airport, not a cash-only island kiosk — the errand is still optional.
Read the list. Some USA plans include the territory; some Caribbean plans include it; some include neither. The island is not automatically both.
eSIM-bundels
Uber from SJU, a timed El Yunque QR, and a ferry that moved: Puerto Rico runs on US-style apps with Caribbean weather. An eSIM is online in arrivals for visitors whose home carrier does not quietly include the island.
Install it before you fly. Some US plans already roam here; many overseas plans do not. Read your home coverage, then decide. The rainforest will not wait while you stand at a kiosk.
