Baku's Old City and Flame Towers: manat, Bolt, BakiKart, and eSIM coverage after Heydar Aliyev Airport.
eSIMs seguras, eficazes e privadas em todo o mundo
Baku is Icherisheher — the walled Old City, the Maiden Tower, carpet shops — and then a Caspian skyline of Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Center's curves. A first trip that works is the capital plus Gobustan petroglyphs and the mud volcanoes, Yanar Dag's hillside flame, and Sheki if you have a night for caravanserai and pakhlava.
Manat (AZN) is the currency. Bolt is the taxi app that actually works in Baku; the metro uses a BakiKart you tap like a city that expects you to be organized. Eat plov, qutab, and piti; tea comes with jam, not as an afterthought. Azerbaijani is the language; Russian helps; English is common in central Baku and thinner in Sheki's market.
Heydar Aliyev International (GYD) is a long, polished arrivals hall. Azercell, Bakcell, and Nar run 4G that is strong in Baku and along the main west road. An eSIM live before you exit means Bolt, the BakiKart top-up, and the Old City hotel pin are not a kiosk errand after a late connection from Istanbul or Doha.

The metro and many buses expect the card. Paying cash on the system like a marshrutka-only city is the wrong Caucasus habit. Top up at station machines while you still have data for the map.
The app covers the capital. The road to Sheki is a hired car or a coach, not a surge-price experiment. Installing only ride-hail is a city-week plan, not a Caucasus-week plan.
You will be poured black tea and offered fruit preserves. Refusing the first cup can read as rude. This is not Armenian coffee culture and not a generic 'try the tea' tip.
You need a car and time at the petroglyph reserve. Combining them with a full Sheki drive in one day is how you see the dashboard. Yanar Dag is a separate, shorter stop.
Icherisheher after 10 a.m. and the seaside boulevard at dusk are the city. If you only Uber between malls you have visited a skyline, not Azerbaijan.

A Baku day-tour that 'includes Sheki' is a highway, not the mountain town. People who care about the caravanserai sleep there and treat Lahıc as a stop with a loom, not a rest-area photo.

The walled city — Maiden Tower, Shirvanshahs, stone lanes — is what you walk when the boulevard empties. Agencies cluster on Nizami and Fountain Square; the old city is where you should actually be after dinner.

Treat Bolt as a Baku tool. Gobustan, Quba, and Sheki are hired cars, coaches, or local taxis. Data still matters so you can message the driver you booked.
Airport desks exist after long-haul flights and add a queue. An eSIM installed at home is online for Bolt at the door. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20 and newer skip that stop.
The main west highway is generally fine on Azercell, Bakcell, or Nar. Side roads and some mountain stretches dip. Download maps and the car booking before you leave Baku.
You can survive on Bolt, and you will sit in Caspian traffic for it. The metro is the sane spine. The card is cheap to get; data helps you read the machine.
Not on a single-country plan. Those borders are real network edges. Use a regional plan that lists each country if Tbilisi or Dilijan is next.
Planos eSIM
Heydar Aliyev Airport is beautiful and still a long walk to a Bolt pin. Install an eSIM before you fly so the driver, the BakiKart machine translation, and the Old City gate are on the phone in arrivals.
Azercell and Bakcell shops in Baku can add a local number later. For Gobustan days and a Sheki night, prepaid data already attached to a Baku-area network is the quieter start.
