Egypt Travel Guide: Essentials, Local Tips & Mobile Data

Cairo, Luxor and the Nile: money, baksheesh, trains and flights, the cooler months, traveler tips, and mobile data via eSIM.

Egypt

Egypt is the rare place where the clichés are true and still not enough. The Pyramids are bigger than the photos. Karnak at first light will rearrange your sense of scale. A dawn balloon over Luxor, a felucca on the Nile, and a plate of koshari in a Cairo side street will do the rest.

It is intense. Touts, baksheesh and the occasional hard sell are part of the texture, not a personal attack. A firm no, a smile, and a pre-booked driver will carry you. The people who love Egypt are the ones who stopped being shocked and started being curious.

Do Cairo and Giza, then fly to Luxor or Aswan. The overnight train is a story; the flight is a morning. Abu Simbel is a long, worth-it add-on. The Red Sea is a different holiday if you want to swim when the ruins are done.

Drink bottled water, tip small and often, and look up. The ceiling is usually the masterpiece they forgot to put on the postcard.

Essenciais

Essenciais de viagem em Egypt

Moeda
Egyptian Pound (EGP). Cash is still essential; cards at hotels. ATMs in cities; tell your bank you are coming.
Línguas
Arabic. English is common around sites and hotels; a few words of Arabic change the temperature of a conversation.
Tipo de ficha
Type C / F, 220V.
Número de emergência
122 (police), 123 (ambulance)
Melhor época para visitar
October to April. Summer in Upper Egypt is genuinely extreme. Ramadan shifts opening hours and the mood of the days.
Gorjetas
Baksheesh is woven in: small notes for washrooms, porters, tomb guards who 'show you something.' 10% in restaurants if service is not added.
Fuso horário
EET (UTC+2)
Água da torneira
Do not drink it. Bottled water is cheap and everywhere. Use it to brush your teeth if your stomach is shy.
Como circular
Uber and Careem work in Cairo. Fly Cairo–Luxor or Cairo–Aswan. The sleeper train is an experience. Site-to-site, a pre-booked driver beats a series of negotiations.
Internet e cobertura
Decent 4G in cities and along the Nile tourist trail; weaker in the desert and at some West Bank tombs. Hotel Wi-Fi is a lottery.

Book the Pyramids and a driver, not a stranger at the gate

Go early, with tickets from the official site or a trusted operator, and a driver who is waiting when you come out. Camel photos, 'free gifts' and unofficial guides at the fence are a business model. You can enjoy the site without funding all of it.

Carry small notes like they are a visa

A 10 or 20 pound note solves washrooms, photo spots and the man who unlocks a side door. Large bills cause a delay that somehow costs more. Break money at the hotel.

Luxor is the trip. Cairo is the prologue.

Give Cairo the Pyramids, the museum and a couple of neighborhoods. Then go south. The density of temples and tombs between Luxor and Aswan is why Egypt is Egypt. Do not spend eight of ten days in traffic.

A firm no is a complete sentence

You do not owe a conversation to every offer. 'La shukran' and keep walking. The travelers who get worn down are the ones who try to be polite to a sales process that is designed to outlast politeness.

Photograph the ceiling, then put the phone away

Flash is often banned in tombs for a reason. Look with your eyes. The colors in a 3,000-year-old chapel will not improve on Instagram, and the guard would like to go home.

FAQ

Perguntas de viagem sobre Egypt, respondidas

Does my phone support eSIM in Egypt?

Unlocked iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, and Galaxy S20 and newer all support eSIM and connect to Egypt's main networks.

How much data do I need for ten days in Egypt?

Uber, maps and messaging are about 1–2 GB a day, so 10–15 GB covers Cairo plus Luxor. Photo-heavy temple days and hotspotting the hotel room push you toward 20 GB.

Is there mobile coverage at the Pyramids and in Luxor?

Giza, central Cairo and Luxor town are fine. Inside some tombs and out toward the desert roads the signal thins. Screenshot tickets and meeting points before you go in.

Should I buy a SIM at Cairo airport?

You can, with your passport, after a long immigration line. An eSIM means the first Uber is a tap and the SIM desk is someone else's problem.

Is Uber safe and useful in Cairo?

Yes — it is how a lot of visitors move, with a fare you can see and a pin your host can share. You still want data for that. Street taxis are a negotiation; Uber is a number.

Planos eSIM

Mantenha-se ligado em Egypt

Uber in Cairo, a pin for your driver, and a map of the West Bank: Egypt is smoother when your phone works. Airport SIM desks want your passport and your patience. An eSIM wants neither.

Download offline maps for temple days. Signal dips inside some sites, and you still want the rest of the day to be a tap, not a hunt for Wi-Fi in a hotel lobby that last worked in 2019.
