Addis near 2,300m, Ethiopian birr, coffee ceremonies, the historic north, and qualitative coverage — no invented visa or plan prices.
eSIMs seguras, eficazes e privadas em todo o mundo
Addis Ababa sits around 2,300 metres. That is the first fact that rearranges a first afternoon: stairs, a slightly drunk-without-drinking head, and a sun that feels closer. Bole is a modern airport bolted onto a city of bajaj, coffee smoke and meskel flowers in season. The birr (ETB) is the currency. Cards work in some hotels; daily life is still cash and patience at the ATM.
Injera is the plate and the utensil. A coffee ceremony is not a latte art class — it is rounds of bunna, incense, and time you did not budget. Fasting days change the menu; ask before you assume every stew has meat. The historic north — Lalibela, Gondar, Axum, the Simien escarpment — is a domestic-flight or long-road decision, not a suburb of the capital.
Ethiopia runs on its own calendar and clock conversations that confuse first-timers; confirm tour times in 'European' hours if your guide offers both. We will not invent visa products or tell you a phone will be blocked. Power and connectivity can dip. That is logistics, not a thriller. Eat vegetarian fasting food, kitfo if you trust the place, and honey wine if someone pours it with a story.

2,300 metres is enough to flatten a sea-level athlete. Walk slower, drink water, and save Entoto for when you have slept. Lalibela and the Simiens go higher still.
If you wanted a wheat wrap, say so once, then adapt. Tear from the nearest edge, eat with the right hand, and treat leftover injera as the plate, not waste.
Shoulders and knees in Lalibela and Axum. Shoes off where you are told. A shawl in the bag solves more arguments than a debate at the door.
Ethiopia uses a different hour-counting convention in daily speech. If a tour is 'at 3,' ask whether that is the clock on your phone. Write it down.
Use ATMs and official desks. A man at Bole with a wad of notes is not your treasury. Hotels that insist on a currency you did not research need a calm question, not a sidewalk deal.

Forum regulars treat domestic seats as part of an international Ethiopian ticket, then book Lalibela, Gondar or Axum on the airline’s own app. The road north is a two-day mountain haul, not a scenic shortcut.

Addis’s giant market only makes sense when someone who knows the sections walks you through cotton, spices and the bargaining. Travellers who hire that person for the churches often book them again just for Merkato.

Altitude. The capital is about 2,300 metres above sea level. Slow down for a day. This is not sea-level Nairobi energy; it is thinner air.
City days: about 1–2 GB if you use maps and chat. Flight days and highland churches should be planned with offline maps. Do not stream across the Simiens.
Towns have some data. Churches, viewpoints and mountain roads often do not. Screenshot tickets and lodge pins in Addis.
Possible, with time and ID habits that change. An eSIM avoids making arrivals a paperwork errand when you would rather acclimatise.
Messaging apps are widely used when the network is up. Brief slowdowns happen. That is a connectivity note, not a scare story. Hotel Wi-Fi is a backup, not a plan.
Planos eSIM
A Ride pin from Bole, a translation of a fasting menu, and a domestic-flight change all want data. An Ethiopia eSIM is online at ADD without making the first hour a SIM-shop negotiation in a city that already wants you to sit down and drink water.
Treat the north as a download-first zone. We will not invent prices or a guaranteed bar on the escarpment.
