Santiago to Calama or Punta Arenas is a flight. Treating Chile like a weekend road trip is how you see airports from the wrong end.
Get the card or the official app for metro. It will not help you in Valparaíso the way you hope.
San Pedro is high. Drink water, skip the big hike on night one, and treat a headache as altitude until proven otherwise.
Boats and treks get pulled. Build a spare day. The mountain will still be there.
Do not feed a pack and then look surprised. Cross the street; they usually have a neighbourhood job.

Since February 2026, Santiago Metro and MetroTren Nos accept Visa, Mastercard, and phone wallets at the gates (Pago Ágil). City buses in the Red network still expect a bip! card if you want the integrated transfer fare. Buy bip! at a Metro boletería if you will ride buses; do not assume the airport tap works on a micros.

First-timers with fewer than seven days pick Atacama or Torres del Paine or the Lakes, not a loop of all three. Add a second region only when the calendar actually has a second week. Santiago nights are for the airport, not a third destination.

Puerto Varas is lovely if you already live near volcanoes and water. Families who flew the length of the country for granite towers get told to spend the south on Patagonia instead. A car for the lake towns is a tool; it is not a drive to Calama.

Only on a regional plan that names Argentina. Mendoza and the southern crossings are close on a map and separate on a contract.
