Yango over a street negotiation with luggage
The pin is the point after a night flight. Wôrô-wôrô is for when you already know the city and are travelling light.
Abidjan to Grand-Bassam: XOF, Yango, maquis grills, Yamoussoukro's basilica, and 4G that actually works in the lagoon city.

Abidjan is a lagoon metropolis that still calls itself the Paris of West Africa with a straight face: Plateau towers, Cocody traffic, Yopougon nights, and a maquis where the chicken is the menu. You fly into Félix Houphouët-Boigny, you ride Yango, and you learn that 'wôrô-wôrô' is a shared taxi with a destination shouted, not a ride you booked.
Grand-Bassam is the colonial beach town an hour away when you want colonial façades and a slower Atlantic. Yamoussoukro is the official capital and the basilica that looks like it was copied from Rome at a scale that still startles. Cocoa is the economy you will taste as cheap chocolate and see as trucks. French is the city. Nouchi is the slang that tells you someone is from here.
Allocó, attiéké, garba if you trust the stall. Rain in the long wet season is a flood in some neighbourhoods. Harmattan haze arrives from the north in the dry months. XOF cash still wins the maquis. Cards work in Zone 4 restaurants. Do not try to 'do the country' in five days. Abidjan plus one town is a trip. The rest is another ticket.

Plastic chairs, smoke, attiéké, a cold drink. The good ones are loud and full. A French menu on the lagoon at hotel prices is a different evening.
Bassam is close. The basilica is a longer run that only pays if you wanted that scale. Do not staple both onto a two-night Plateau stay.
ATMs in Cocody and Plateau. Small notes for fruit and the maquis. The card that worked at the hotel will bounce at the grill.
Allow hours, not minutes, when the sky opens. Flooded roads are not a rumour in some quartiers. Leave earlier than the app says.

A week that already includes Abidjan can add Yamoussoukro and Assinie on buses and minibuses if you are used to West African roads. Grand-Bassam stays a day trip; Assinie is the lagoon-and-Atlantic stay people actually linger on. Do not try to invent both as the same afternoon.

People who have looped Grand-Bassam, the basilica city, Bouaké, Korhogo, and San-Pédro say the tarmac is not as kind as the glossy guides claim. A hired car with a driver is the inland habit. You will meet almost no other tourists once you leave the lagoon.

A grill with plastic chairs, smoke and attiéké. Yes — XOF cash. Yango can take you there on data; the chicken is still francs.
Yango with luggage. Unlocked iPhone XS, Pixel 3 or Galaxy S20+ can run the pin on a Cote d'Ivoire eSIM. Wôrô-wôrô is for when you already know the line.
The desks want a passport. An eSIM means Plateau is a route, not a queue in the arrivals humidity.
For maps and WhatsApp, yes. Plateau hotel Wi-Fi is usually fine at night. Size up if you hotspot a laptop through a work week.
Only if the plan lists Ghana. Elubo is close. A single-country plan is not.

Yango, a Plateau pin and a maquis location all want data when you leave ABJ. A Cote d'Ivoire eSIM skips the passport kiosk and has the first ride already on the screen.
Install it before you fly. Abidjan 4G is strong enough for maps and WhatsApp — which is how this city confirms everything. Download an offline map only if you are leaving the lagoon for a long interior road.
