Octopus is the city, not a souvenir
Load Octopus on the first hour — MTR, 7-Eleven, some wet-market stalls. A tourist card works; a phone-wallet version is cleaner if your bank supports it.
Kowloon to the Peak: Octopus, MTR taps, typhoon days, dim sum queues, and why a Hong Kong eSIM is not a China eSIM.
Безопасные, эффективные и приватные eSIM по всему миру
Hong Kong is a vertical city that runs on taps: Octopus for the MTR, a tram up the Peak, a ferry to an island that still has a village tempo. It is not mainland China. Google and WhatsApp work. English is on every platform sign. The humidity will still try to steal your afternoon.
Eat in a dai pai dong or a cha chaan teng before you chase a Michelin stall. Order milk tea, don't linger at peak lunch, and learn that 'tea restaurant' means something faster and louder than a cafe. Ride the Star Ferry once even if it is not efficient. That harbour is the whole pitch.
Typhoon signals are not a vibe. When the number climbs, ferries and hiking trails close for a reason. Check the Observatory, not a hostel rumour. Then go eat indoor hotpot and wait it out like everyone else who lives here.

A mainland China plan can dump you behind the firewall in Kowloon. Buy a plan that names Hong Kong. Macau is a different listing again.
Dragon's Back and the Peak trails cook after 10am in summer. Start at dawn, carry water, and treat a Signal 3+ day as a cancellation, not a challenge.
The good halls are loud by 9am and tired by 2. Go hungry, share, and ignore anyone selling a 'skip the queue' ticket on the pavement.
Airport Express is fast and priced like it. The slower MTR via Tsing Yi still dumps you in Central without a taxi argument.
Octopus Hong Kong
If you return a standard On-Loan Octopus within 90 days of issue, Octopus charges a handling fee (HK$11 or 1% of the remaining value, whichever is higher). Most visitors leave inside that window, so expect the fee. Refund remaining value under HK$1,000 at any MTR Customer Service Centre before you fly; the sold Tourist card keeps no deposit and does not refund the card price.

Contactless bank cards now work on many MTR gates, but Octopus still wins on older buses, green minibuses, and tiny noodle shops that never saw a foreign Visa. Pick one payment method per rider and stick with it so daily caps and transfer discounts actually attach. Mixing a bank card, a QR code, and a borrowed Octopus is how people lose the cheap fare they thought they had.

Octopus skips the ticket window, not the snake to the car. Weekday mornings before mid-morning are quieter; holiday afternoons are a stand. If the line wraps Garden Road, Citybus 15 from Exchange Square or Central Piers still puts you on the ridge.

The official calendar can show every slot gone for weeks while the lower terminus still sells walk-up rides and takes Octopus at the barrier. Green minibus 1 from Hong Kong Station is the local skip when Garden Road looks like a queue for a concert.

Yes — Hong Kong is not on the mainland firewall. Gmail, Maps, Instagram and WhatsApp load on a local network. A China-only eSIM is the one that will surprise you if you hop to Shenzhen.
Yes. Data does not pay the MTR gate. Octopus (physical or in a wallet) is the tap. Some phones can hold both an eSIM and an Octopus card; they do different jobs.
You can. You will also queue after a long-haul. An eSIM installed at home skips the desk and has the MTR map up before baggage.
Towns and the Ngong Ping cable-car corridor are fine. Ridge trails and some beaches drop to a bar or none. Download an offline map for a full hiking day.
Only if the plan lists those places. Most country plans die at the border. The ferry to Macau is close; the network contract is not.
Тарифы eSIM
Octopus top-ups, MTR disruptions and a typhoon push alert all want data the minute you leave Chek Lap Kok. A Hong Kong eSIM is online in arrivals without a counter that wants your passport for a tourist SIM.
Install it before you fly. The first useful thing it does is show whether the Airport Express is worth it tonight, not whether you can find Wi-Fi in the hall.
