Check NBJ versus Quatro de Fevereiro before you send the pin
Luanda now has two airport stories. A driver waiting at the wrong one is not a cute mix-up; it is an hour of ring-road. Read the ticket code, not last year's blog that only knew LAD.
Luanda in kwanza: candongueiros, Portuguese menus, Unitel data, and an eSIM ready before Quatro de Fevereiro or Agostinho Neto.
Luanda is the trip for most visitors: the Ilha waterfront, the Fortaleza, and traffic that treats a ten-kilometre errand as an afternoon. International flights have been shifting toward Dr. António Agostinho Neto International (NBJ) while Quatro de Fevereiro (LAD) still handles some movements — confirm which runway your ticket actually uses before you drop a pin for the driver.
Portuguese is the language of menus, ministries, and candongueiros, the blue-and-white shared minivans that are how Luanda actually moves when you are not in a hired car. Pay in kwanza (AOA). Cards appear in malls and hotels; the grilled fish on the Ilha and the candongueiro seat are cash. Eat muamba de galinha, funge, and calulu; kizomba leaks out of taxis whether you asked or not.
Weekend escapes are Kissama's palanca and the coast toward Benguela if you have more than a city week. Unitel and Africell are the names on the towers. A travel eSIM that is live before baggage claim beats standing at a downtown Unitel shop with a passport after a delayed landing.

The blue-and-white van is a corridor you learn by asking 'Ilha?' or 'Benfica?' in Portuguese. It is not Bolt. Treating Luanda like a city where ride-hail covers every barrio is a Lagos-or-Nairobi import that only half-fits.
A large bill on the Ilha at night is how you wait for change that never comes. ATMs inside malls beat street-side machines. This is not a USD-on-the-menu island.
Menus, police directions, and the Unitel queue run in Portuguese. A few phrases — bom dia, obrigado, quanto custa — change the temperature. English-only works in a handful of hotel lobbies.
Chicken in red palm oil with funge on the side is the plate. If the restaurant only offers a generic 'grilled fish and chips' in English, walk toward the place whose chalkboard is in Portuguese.

Luanda is walkable in a few daylight neighbourhoods and that is not the same as a beach holiday. Regulars send you 150 km south to Cabo Ledo, or much farther to Benguela and Lobito, when they mean sand. Keep a cheap phone and small kwanza notes if you do walk the capital.

The hairpin pass that people photograph is the highway between Lubango and Namibe, not a viewpoint you add to a Luanda morning. Pedras Negras and Kalandula sit in the Malanje country on another axis. Plan the south as its own flight or a long overland.

Read the ticket. Dr. António Agostinho Neto (NBJ) and Quatro de Fevereiro (LAD) are different places on different sides of the city's traffic. Data on arrival is how you send the correct pin instead of a guess from an old blog.
In the capital, Unitel and Africell are generally enough for maps and messaging. Kissama and the road south are thinner. Download offline maps. Unlocked phones (iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20 and newer) can run the eSIM without a downtown shop visit.
No. WhatsApp rides on data. You need an Angolan number only if someone local must SMS or call you on the GSM number. Many visitors keep the home number on Wi-Fi calling and use eSIM data.
You can, with ID, if the desk is open after a late flight. An eSIM installed at home avoids that queue and works in the car immediately. Add a local SIM later only if you need the number.
Not on a single-country Angola plan. Those are different networks and different registrations. If the itinerary crosses, you need a plan that lists each country or a second eSIM.

Whether you land at Quatro de Fevereiro or Agostinho Neto, you want a working map before the ring road. Install a travel eSIM before you fly so the driver pin and the hotel on the Ilha are not hostage to airport Wi-Fi.
Unitel shops in Luanda can issue a local number later if work needs Angolan SMS. For the first days of candongueiros and Kissama timing, prepaid data already on the phone is the calmer path.
