Belgium is a small country that argues in three official languages and still gets you from Brussels to Bruges before your waffle cools. The language line is real: greet in Dutch in Antwerp, French in Namur, and don't make it a personality. A smile and the local hello beats a lecture about bilingualism.
Trains are the point. SNCB is how you do Ghent, Bruges, Liège and the coast without a car. Buy in the app, validate the plan for a weekend hop, and treat Brussels Midi as a station that wants you moving, not lingering with luggage on the wrong concourse.

Domestic Belgian trains are commuter rail, not reserved TGVs. Buy in the blue SNCB / NMBS app (not SNCB International) and the QR code is valid on any service on that route until midnight. Miss the one from Brussels Airport and take the next; they run often. Eurostar and a few express products are the exception — those need a seat.

From 19:01 Friday through the last Sunday train, a Weekend Return on domestic SNCB is roughly the price of a one-way and lets you ride any Belgian train in that window. A return Antwerp–Bruges can include a Ghent stop on the same corridor. That is not a weekday trick and not an international ticket.

Ordinary Brussels retail goes quiet on Sunday. Restaurants, museums and bookshops stay open, and the first Sunday of the month wakes the centre. Regulars send the Sunday hop to Bruges because more of that town actually trades.
