Tereré is a social technology
If someone passes the gourd, follow their lead on the straw and the herbs. Refusing once is fine; treating it as dirty is how you end the conversation. This is not Argentine hot mate with different branding.
Asunción to the missions and the Chaco: guaraníes, tereré, when to go, traveler tips, and mobile data via eSIM.
Paraguay is the South American country backpackers still skip, which is either a mistake or the point. Asunción is a river capital with a siesta energy, Jesuit mission ruins that actually feel like ruins, and a Chaco that looks empty until you learn it is not. Spanish and Guaraní share the street. Tereré — cold mate with herbs — is not a tourist drink. It is how the afternoon works.
The guaraní (PYG) comes in numbers that look like a phone number. Cards work in the capital; cash still wins the market. Type C, 220V. Itaipú dam on the Brazilian edge is a day of scale. Encarnación faces Posadas across the river. Ciudad del Este is a duty-free weather system, not a beach.
May to September is the cooler, drier winter most visitors prefer. Summer is hot and wet. There is no backpacker bus circus, which means you will use ordinary long-distance coaches and a little patience.
A first trip is Asunción plus the southern missions, or Asunción plus Itaipú if dams are your religion. Do not treat Paraguay as a taxi between Brazil and Argentina. Stay long enough to be offered tereré by someone who is not selling it.

Trinidad and Jesús are the pair. Day-tripping from Asunción is a long bus for a rushed ruin. Encarnación is the base with a beach energy on the river.
The triple frontier is loud, useful and easy to overstay in a mall. Itaipú is the reason to go if you are not buying a blender. Keep the bag zipped.
Monday energy, long lunches, and a riverfront that is nicer at dusk. The Loma San Jerónimo view and a chipa from a stall beat another steakhouse that could be in Buenos Aires.
Distances, heat, and towns that are not hostels. Go with people who know the road, or do not go. The empty look on the map is not an invitation.

Asunción casas de cambio will refuse a wrinkled or marked dollar bill, or they will punish the rate. Carry clean hundreds if you are converting cash, and keep a second card — not every ATM likes the same network.

You can ride from Asunción to Encarnación or Filadelfia without drama, but the board is not an English app. Ask in Spanish — Guaraní helps at the smaller yards — and do not treat Iguazú as a Paraguayan day trip. Travelers who want the falls sleep on the Brazilian or Argentine side.

Encarnación and the main mission road are usually fine. The Chaco and smaller villages are not a promise. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20+ take the eSIM in Asunción; download maps before the long bus.
City maps and a few ruin photos: 1–2 GB a day, so about 10 GB for an Asunción–missions week.
Possible, with ID, in a city shop. There is no theatrical airport SIM scene. An eSIM skips the errand for a short visit.
Only if those countries are listed. Ciudad del Este and Encarnación sit on borders. A country-only plan dies when you walk to Foz or Posadas.
The guaraní has a lot of zeros. That is the currency, not a scam. Your eSIM will not convert it — a card or a careful ATM receipt will.

A coach that only lists the town in Guaraní on the ticket, a pin for a residential Asunción stay, and a translation of a menu that never bothered with English: Paraguay is easier with data from ASU. An eSIM is online in arrivals without a tourist SIM hall that does not exist.
Install it before you fly. This is not a country with competing kiosks at baggage claim. You will want the first trusted taxi more than a shop hunt.
