Moldova on the leu: Chișinău, Cricova and Mileștii Mici wine, 112, traveler tips, and an eSIM for marshrutkas and cellar maps.

Moldova is a small wine country that most people still treat as a layover rumor: Chișinău is a Soviet-wide capital with a surprisingly good restaurant scene, linden trees, and a nightlife that starts late. The reason to come is underground — Cricova's limestone tunnels and Mileștii Mici's claim on endless bottles — plus villages that pour the house red like water and mean it.
Money is the Moldovan leu (MDL), not the euro and not the Romanian leu. Cards work in the capital; cellar shops and village tables may want cash. Romanian is the language on the street (you will also hear "Moldovan"); Russian is common; English is fine in Chișinău wine tourism and thinner in the countryside. 112 is the emergency number. Plugs are Type C/F.
Eat placinte, a grilled meat that arrived with dill, and more wine than you scheduled. Marshrutkas are the real intercity network; a booked cellar transfer is how you still have a liver and a return seat. Transnistria is a different administrative reality — if you go, treat it as a planned border, not a cute day trip you invent at breakfast.
A first trip that works is Chișinău plus two cellar visits and one village lunch, not a race to every monastery on a map. Moldova is not "Romania but cheaper." It is its own table, and the tunnels are the cathedral.

Cricova is the showpiece tunnels and a tasting room that still feels like a state visit. Mileștii Mici is the scale brag and a longer sit. Doing both in one day is a hangover, not a flex. Book official tours; do not freelance a gate.
ATMs in Chișinău. Village lunches want notes. Paying in euros because "it is almost the EU" is how you collect a shrug and a bad rate.
Know the station, the destination sign, and the last useful return. A cellar day on a private transfer is the tasting version; the van is the local version. Screenshot the stop.
Eat where the menu is still in Romanian first. Placinte for a snack, a proper lunch, then wine. The capital is not only a bed on the way to a tunnel.
If you go, use current official guidance and a documented route. It is not a wine-cellar add-on. Most first trips do not need it.

Visitors who boarded for 'Orhei' at Piața Centrală landed in a different town, far from the cave monastery. The cliffs are a village name on the marshrutka window, and the return times are posted beside the little museum, not in an app.

Forum reports of groups stuck after the cliffs are common. Keep the same driver for the day or treat the last posted van as a hard close. Combining the monastery with a winery only works if that car is already paid to wait.

Neither is the everyday currency. You want Moldovan lei (MDL). Cards work in the capital. Village tastings and some vans are cash. Romanian lei are a different country.
Use the official channels and keep the confirmation screenshot. Mobile data in Chișinău is enough to arrange it. Underground, assume the signal dies — have the driver pin saved offline.
City maps and two cellar days: a small weekly amount if you are not hotspotting. Download the return route before you go below the limestone.
You can. An eSIM means the first trolleybus or taxi is already a map, and the cellar WhatsApp is already delivered.
Only if the plan lists Moldova. Language overlap is not network overlap. Country-only Romanian plans stop at the Prut.
Planes eSIM
Cellar bookings, a marshrutka Cyrillic-or-Romanian sign, and a map of Chișinău's wide streets all want data. A prepaid eSIM is online at RMO before you ride into town, without a kiosk conversation about lei versus leu.
If Romania or Ukraine is also on the ticket, read the country list. A Moldova-only eSIM stops at the border even when the wine road does not look like one.
