Tiny Liechtenstein on Swiss francs: Vaduz, alpine buses, Swiss-customs feel, traveler tips, and an eSIM that still needs a Europe-plus-CH check.
Des eSIMs sûres, efficaces et privées partout dans le monde
Liechtenstein is a postage-stamp principality between Switzerland and Austria: a castle above Vaduz, a short stretch of Rhine, and vineyards that look like someone folded the Alps into a village. You can walk the capital in an afternoon. That is not a slight — it is the geometry. Most people arrive by train to Sargans or Buchs in Switzerland, or Feldkirch in Austria, then finish on a yellow bus that already feels Swiss.
The money is the Swiss franc (CHF), not the euro. Cards work. Paying in euros if someone accepts them is how you collect a bad rate and change in francs anyway. Customs and day-to-day shopping have a Swiss feel because Liechtenstein sits in the Swiss customs area: grocery brands, cleanliness, and prices that will not pretend to be Austrian-bargain.
Hike the Fürstensteig if you have a head for exposure, ride up to Malbun for a bowl of barley soup, and stamp the tourist passport at the tourism office because it is actually fun. German is the language; English is fine in Vaduz. The whole country is a day trip that rewards an overnight if you want the castle lit and the commuter traffic gone.
Do not treat Vaduz as a duty-free mall with a crown on it. Walk the Rhine path, look at the Kunstmuseum if the weather collapses, and take the bus one valley over. The pleasure is scale: a state you can understand with your feet.

Sargans, Buchs, or Feldkirch, then the bus. Check the LIEmobil timetable the night before. Assuming a taxi from Zürich Airport is "just there" is how you overpay for a mountain principality.
ATMs and cards in CHF. A café that takes euros will not do you a favor on the rate. This is a Swiss-franc country that happens to speak German and sit in the EEA.
Do the castle viewpoint and the art museum if it rains. Then get on the bus up the valley. The principality's personality is hillside, not the souvenir street alone.
The tourism office will stamp a booklet if you want the ritual. Your actual movement is Schengen / Swiss-customs reality — do not confuse the ink with a border procedure.
Sunday and early evening can be quiet. Buy picnic food when the supermarket is open. The Rhine path does not have a late convenience culture.

Day-trip lists put the covered wooden bridge over the Rhine on the way in or out. One bank is Switzerland; the other is the postcard, and it is a few minutes from the Städtle, not a separate excursion.

The walk up is on every list, then the reminder that the princely house is closed. You photograph it from the trail and come back down to the pedestrian street; Sunday in town means fewer doors and a pizza in Triesen if you arrived late.

No. The currency is the Swiss franc. Cards work. Paying in euros is a tourist tax you give yourself.
Only if the country list includes Liechtenstein — and often you also care about Switzerland, because that is how you arrive. A lot of Europe SKUs omit Switzerland. Read the list twice.
Maps, one bus app, and a few photos: a small daily amount. Download the Fürstensteig or Malbun map anyway; trails are not a coverage promise.
There is no commercial airport. You arrive through Zürich, Innsbruck, or Friedrichshafen, then rail and bus. An eSIM ready before that chain is simpler than hunting a kiosk in a Swiss station.
If your eSIM lists both Liechtenstein and Switzerland, one plan covers the Sargans-to-Vaduz hop. If it lists only one, the station coffee stop can already be a dead data zone.
Forfaits eSIM
Bus apps, a hike GPX, and a hotel pin in Vaduz all want data, and many "Europe" eSIMs quietly skip Switzerland — which is the network neighborhood you are standing in. A prepaid eSIM that lists Liechtenstein (and usually Switzerland) is the clean way to step off the Sargans train already online.
Install before you travel. The mountain bus will not wait while you configure a QR code in the rain.
