The elevator is transit, not a gimmick
Monaco is stacked. Follow the public lift signs between the station, the harbor, and the Rock. Treating every change of height as a taxi is how you spend the afternoon in tunnels.
Tiny Monaco in euros: public elevators, Type C/E/F, trains from Nice, traveler tips, and an eSIM that still needs a France-vs-Monaco check.
Des eSIMs sûres, efficaces et privées partout dans le monde
Monaco is a city-state the size of a large neighborhood: a rock with a palace, a harbor of boats that cost more than apartments, and a Formula 1 circuit that is just the street on any other weekend. You walk, you take a public elevator through the cliff, and you are in another postcode of the same postcard. There is no airport. You arrive from Nice (NCE) by train, bus, or a transfer along the Corniche.
The currency is the euro. Cards are normal. French is official; English and Italian are everywhere in hospitality; Monegasque exists on signs and in identity. Plugs are Type C, E, and F at 230V — the usual mainland mix. 112 works. Tap water is fine. The whole place is a day trip that rewards a night if you want the harbor lights without the cruise-tender crush.
Eat a socca if you wandered over the French line, a pastry that costs city-state money, and a coffee you drink standing because sitting on the Casino terrace is a different sport. The Oceanographic Museum is the rainy-day merit. Grand Prix week is not "Monaco plus atmosphere" — it is a different city with different beds and different crowds. Book that on purpose or avoid it on purpose.
A first visit that works is the Rock, the harbor, one elevator maze, and a train back to Nice or a night in a quieter stack of apartments. Do not treat Monaco as a mall attached to the casino. The pleasure is vertical: stairs, lifts, and a state you can cross before your coffee cools.

NCE, then the train to Monaco-Monte-Carlo. The station is already in the cliff. A helicopter exists for people who booked it; the TER is how the rest of us arrive.
Beds vanish, streets close, and "a quick look" is not a plan. Either commit to the event or pick another week. The circuit is the city; there is no bypass.
You can walk the square. Going in has rules and a cost culture. The harbor at dusk from a public path is the free version of the same glitter.
The French line is a street. A pastry two blocks into France can be the same butter for less theatre. Then walk back for the view you actually came for.

Even on ordinary weekdays the Riquier stop packs the TER. Ville is the station regulars name when they want a seat, and a return printed as 'Nice' means Ville, not a suburban halt.

People who start from the Menton side of the principality do the beach and the garden before they ever reach Place du Casino. Fontvieille is the working basin they often miss on a first pass; it is a different terrace, not a shortcut.

No commercial airport. Fly into Nice, then take the train, bus, or a transfer. An eSIM that already works in France and Monaco makes that chain a map, not a guessing game.
Only if the country list includes Monaco. Many metropolitan France plans do. Some travel SKUs do not. The walk from Beausoleil can already be the edge of the plan.
Train tickets, lift maps, and a few harbor photos: a small daily amount. You are never far from a café, but the station tunnel is a bad place to discover you have no signal.
You can. An eSIM means the TER platform and the first public elevator are already in the map, which is the whole arrival.
Yes — on foot plus public elevators and buses. A car is a parking problem. The principality was designed as stairs and lifts long before it was designed as a circuit.
Forfaits eSIM
The train from Nice, a lift map, and a dinner pin on the Rock all want data, and some "France" eSIMs never list Monaco. A prepaid eSIM that includes the principality is online when you step out of the station cave.
Install before you ride the TER. If you are based in Nice all week, confirm both France and Monaco on the plan — the border is a sidewalk.
