Hungary Travel Guide: Essentials, Local Tips & Mobile Data

Budapest baths, ruin bars and the Danube: forint, when to go, traveler tips, and easy mobile data via eSIM.

Hungary

Hungary is a capital split by a river, a thermal bath in the middle of town, and a ruin bar that started in a gap and became a genre. Budapest is the trip for most people, and it is enough: Buda's hill, Pest's palaces, a sunrise on the Parliament, and a bowl of something paprika-red.

It is still excellent value by Western European standards. The forint is the currency — not the euro — and a thermal afternoon plus a dinner will not require a strategy meeting. English is common in the centre. A jó napot at the bath desk is still good manners.

Do the baths properly (Széchenyi, Gellért, or a neighborhood one), walk both sides of the river, and take a day train to Eger or the Danube Bend if you have the time. Lake Balaton is the summer extra. The rest of the country is wine, villages and a slower clock.

Eat lángos once, goulash that is a soup, and a cake in a coffee house that survived an empire. Budapest is a grand city that still lets you in.

Essenziali

Essenziali di viaggio per Hungary

Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro. Cards are widely accepted; keep some cash for baths, bakeries and smaller bars.

Hungarian (not related to the neighbors). English is common in Budapest tourism, thinner in the countryside.
Tipo di presa
Type C / F, 230V.
Numero di emergenza

Periodo migliore per visitare
April to June and September to October. Summer is hot and busy; winter is baths, markets and a beautiful gloom.

Fuso orario
CET (UTC+1), CEST (UTC+2) in summer

Safe to drink.
Come spostarsi
Budapest has metro, trams and a travel card that is worth it. Trains to Eger, Vienna and Bratislava are easy. The airport bus or a pre-booked transfer beats a freelance taxi.
Internet e copertura
Strong 4G/5G in Budapest and towns; fine on the main rail lines.

The baths have a rhythm

Bring flip-flops, a towel, and the locker's little ritual. Széchenyi is the postcard and the crowd; a neighborhood bath is the local afternoon. Do not treat the thermal water like a swimming pool. Sit, soak, and go wrinkly on purpose.

Ruin bars were a neighborhood first

Szimpla is the famous one and worth a look. Then go to a smaller courtyard, a wine bar in the Jewish Quarter, or a place with chairs that do not have a queue of stag parties. The genre is better one street over.

Forint, not euro, and not the worst booth

ATMs from a real bank, decline the machine's conversion. Exchange booths on Váci utca are a museum of bad rates. Hungary is cheap until you pay tourist-square prices in the wrong currency.

Walk the river at night and the hill in the morning

Parliament lit up, the bridges, then Fisherman's Bastion before the tour buses. Budapest is a walking city dressed as an imperial set. The tram along the Danube is a rest, not a failure.

A day out of Budapest recalibrates the week

Eger's wine, Szentendre's streets, or a soak in a town bath that is not on the same T-shirt. The capital is the star. The country is the reason to come back.

FAQ

Domande di viaggio su Hungary, con risposta

Does my phone support eSIM in Hungary?

Unlocked iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, and Galaxy S20 and newer all support eSIM.

How much data do I need for a week in Budapest?

Maps, trams and a few bath-and-Danube photos: 1–2 GB a day, so 10 GB is plenty for a week.

Is mobile coverage good outside Budapest?

Towns and the main rail lines are solid. Lake Balaton is fine in season. Smaller wine villages dip. Download the map for day trips.

Should I buy a SIM at Budapest Airport?

You can, after a flight. An eSIM means the airport bus is a tap and the first ruin-bar pin is already loading.

Does a Hungary eSIM work in Austria or Slovakia?

Only on a regional Europe plan. Country-only plans stop at the border, and Vienna is close enough to tempt you.

Piani eSIM

Resta connesso in Hungary

BKK tickets, a bath map and a translation of a menu that is proudly Hungarian: you want data. An eSIM is online at BUD before you ride the 100E, without a kiosk conversation about forint and roaming.

A Europe plan is worth it if Vienna or Bratislava is also on the ticket — both are a short, tempting train.
