Lake Ohrid to Skopje: denars, buses, 112, when to go, traveler tips, and mobile data via eSIM.
eSIM sicure, efficaci e private in tutto il mondo
North Macedonia is a lake that UNESCO got to first and a capital that rebuilt itself with statues. Ohrid is stone, a boardwalk and water that still looks like a rumour of the Adriatic. Skopje is the Vardar, a bazaar that smells like grill, and a new square that argues with itself. In between: Tikveš wine, Matka canyon, and a bus network that is more useful than the leftover trains.
The denar (MKD) is the money — not the euro, even when a lakeside menu shows both. Cards work in tourist places; keep denars for the kombi and the bakery. Emergency is 112, same habit as much of Europe. Eat tavče gravče, a shopska if you must, and grilled meat that arrives without a speech. A чао and a благодарам go further than you think.
May, June and September are the sweet months: the lake is swimmable, the buses are not a crush, and Skopje is not a furnace. July and August fill Ohrid's old town. Winter is short days and a different, quieter Balkan.
A first trip is Ohrid plus Skopje. Adding Albania's side of the lake or a Kosovo hop is easy on the map and a different eSIM listing. Do not try to 'do the Balkans' from one lakeside apartment in four days.

By midday the boardwalk is a tour-group weather system. Stay inside the walls or just above, swim before breakfast, and eat where the menu is still in Macedonian first.
ATMs spit MKD. A waiter may quote euros; check the rate on the receipt. Keep small denars for the fortress and the kombi that never got a terminal.
Walk, then take the canyon boat if it is running. Go early. Treating it as a 45-minute Skopje checkbox is how you see a car park.
Walk the Stone Bridge, then get lost toward the Čaršija for tea and grill. The statues will still be there when you come back with ajvar on your shirt.
Day trips happen. Your denars and your country eSIM may not. Check the crossing and the plan list before you treat Pogradec as a longer boardwalk.
TripAdvisor Forums
Once the lanes are done, Macedonia threads send people down the shore to the monastery. A morning in the old town is not the whole lake, and the Bay of Bones sits on that same circuit if you still have light.

After Skopje and Ohrid, the forum's extra is Bitola, not another statue on Macedonia Square. The bus works; the drive is what makes a same-day return sane.

112 is the emergency number. You can still dial emergency services without a local plan in many cases, but maps, translation and the hotel pin want data. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20+ take a North Macedonia eSIM for that part.
Sometimes. It is not an EU member. Read the country list. A plan that stops at Greece or Bulgaria is a quiet failure at the Ohrid bus station.
Buses, maps and lake photos: 1–2 GB a day, so about 10 GB for a Skopje–Ohrid week.
You can. An eSIM means the city bus or taxi is the only errand, which is the right number after a hop through Vienna or Istanbul.
Only if those countries are listed. Lake Ohrid's other shore and the Kosovo highway are close. A North Macedonia-only plan is not a Western Balkans pass.
Piani eSIM
A bus from Skopje that only exists on a Facebook post, a pin for a stone house in Ohrid's alleys, and 112 in your pocket: North Macedonia is easier with data from SKP. An eSIM is online before you meet the taxi that still prefers denars in cash.
Install it before you fly. A Europe plan only helps if this country is actually on the list — the Balkans are where generic 'EU roaming' stories go to die.
