Cotonou to Ouidah: CFA cash, zemidjan pins, Ganvié on the lake, dry-season timing, and mobile data that works when the moto does.
Veilige, effectieve en privé eSIMs over de hele wereld
Benin is a slim coastal republic that still sets the calendar for Vodun. Ouidah's python temple and the Route des Esclaves are not a museum circuit you rush between brunch spots. Cotonou is the engine: red earth, motorcycle taxis, a lagoon, and a port that keeps the country fed. Porto-Novo is the official capital and a quieter day if you want palaces and a slower market.
Ganvié sits on Lake Nokoué on stilts. You go by pirogue, not by a clever walking tour. Agree the boat before you step in, and treat the village as a place people live, not a floating set. Inland, the north toward Pendjari is a different climate and a different itinerary — do not stitch it on as an afterthought to a weekend in Cotonou.
French opens doors. A few words of Fon help in the south. Eat at a maquis: pâte, grilled fish, sauce, a cold Flag. Harmattan haze in the dry months is a sky, not a rumour. Land at Cadjehoun, skip the fantasy of a metro, and let a zemidjan or a trusted driver do the first hour.

There is no meter. Say the neighbourhood, agree the CFA, then get on. A pin in WhatsApp beats shouting a street name the driver has never used.
Go with a boatman you chose, not the first hustle at the jetty. The village is lived-in. Ask before you photograph someone's doorway.
The door of no return, the tree of return, and the python temple only make sense if you walk the route. Hire a guide in town, not a stranger in the car park.
ATMs in Cotonou spit XOF. Small notes for fuel, fruit and the pirogue. A card at a Plateau hotel does not buy grilled fish in Dantokpa.
The north is a long, planned run. Do not add it to a three-night Cotonou stay because a blog said 'safari'. The coast and the park are different weeks.

From Lagos, the shared cars leave the Mile 2 park, not the airport kerb. At Seme you walk the joint Nigerian–Beninese post, then pick another taxi on the Cotonou side. Change money at the border and expect the last stretch into town to be a separate fare.

Cotonou’s big market has a fetish quarter that is a labyrinth. People who have done it hire one guide at the entrance so they are not collected by three more, and so photo permissions get settled once. Abomey’s palaces can wait for another day; this is a Cotonou morning.

Agree the CFA fare and the neighbourhood before you sit. Drop a WhatsApp pin — street names are a weak system. Unlocked iPhone XS, Pixel 3 or Galaxy S20+ can run that pin on a Benin eSIM from Cadjehoun.
The kiosks want a passport and your patience after a night flight. An eSIM installed at home has maps up in arrivals. Same 4G idea; less queue.
Ouidah town and the Cotonou–Porto-Novo coast are usually fine. On the lake and toward the north, treat signal as optional and screenshot the boat meeting point.
Maps, WhatsApp and photos are a modest daily habit in Cotonou. A mid-size plan covers a beach-and-Ouidah week. Size up if you hotspot a laptop in the hotel.
Only if the plan lists Togo. Lomé is close. A Benin-only plan stops at the border.
eSIM-bundels
A zemidjan only works if you can drop a pin. Cadjehoun after a night flight is a poor place to learn how a local SIM kiosk wants your passport. A Benin eSIM is online in arrivals so the first moto is a location, not a negotiation in the dark.
Install it before you fly. WhatsApp is how boats, drivers and guesthouses confirm. Coast 4G is enough for that. Download an offline map if you are leaving the lagoon for the north.
