Mariehamn in euros: Viking and Eckerö ferries from Finland and Sweden, Swedish on the street, .ax, and eSIM data for the archipelago.
Bezpieczne, skuteczne i prywatne eSIM-y na całym świecie
Åland is a Swedish-speaking autonomous archipelago that happens to be Finnish territory and pay in euros. You do not fly into a big hub and rent a car at the belt; you step off a Viking Line, Tallink Silja, or Eckerö Line ferry in Mariehamn after a Baltic crossing from Stockholm, Kapellskär, Turku, or Helsinki, and the first language on the quay is Swedish.
The islands sit in a tax-free ferry quirk of EU law, which is why the ship shops feel like a duty-free corridor and why a .ax address on a cafe Wi-Fi login is not a typo. Rent a bike in Mariehamn, ride toward Kastelholm or the maritime museum, and eat Åland pancake with stewed plums — not cinnamon rolls you could have bought in Turku. Finnish works in offices; Swedish is what you use at the bakery.
There is no metro and no midnight coach network. Summer is archipelago boats and the Geta or Eckerö bus; winter is quieter, darker, and still on Finnish plugs and the 112 emergency number. A Finland-labelled eSIM is the plan to check, because Åland's towers talk to Finnish numbering (+358 18) more than to a Sweden-only package.

Stockholm–Mariehamn on Viking Line or Kapellskär–Mariehamn on Eckerö Line is the arrival, not a transfer you skip. Book the cabin or the reclining seat the way you would book a flight; turning up as if Åland were a suburb of Helsinki is how you miss the last sailing.
A Finnish-only greeting is the wrong opener in a Mariehamn bakery. Hej, then English, matches how the islands actually run. Finnish is fine in government buildings; it is not the street default.
The ship shop exists because Åland has a special EU tax status. That is why prices on the Viking or Eckerö crossing look different from a domestic Turku–Stockholm mental model. It is not the same as a random cruise duty-free.
Hotel and municipal sites use the .ax domain. If a booking email or Wi-Fi splash page is only .fi, you may be on a mainland Finnish chain page, not the island operator you think you paid.
Oven-baked, cardamom-scented, with prune soup or jam — that is the island plate. Ordering a thin pannekoek and expecting the same thing is how you know you copied a Stockholm tip into the wrong sea.
Flashback
Mariehamn’s nightlife sits in a handful of rooms, but the local daytime move is a bike or beach-buggy ride out to Klosterviken and a jump off the granite. The steamship pier minigolf is the other small-town afternoon. Treat the capital as a harbour base, then leave it.

If you can move beyond the main island, the outer kommuner are the point. Locals send visitors to Kökar for the open Baltic weather and keep Brändö on the wish list. A cottage on one of those islands is a different trip from a hotel night in town.

Do not assume it. Åland is Finnish territory with Swedish as the language. Plans that list Finland are the ones that usually attach to local towers; a Sweden-only eSIM may roam poorly or not at all. Check the country list for Finland, not just 'Nordics' in the marketing title.
Mariehamn is not built around airport SIM halls. Install the eSIM before you leave Stockholm, Turku, or Helsinki so maps and the next bus work when you walk off the ship. Unlocked phones (iPhone XS, Pixel 3, Galaxy S20 and newer) can hold that profile next to your home number.
The main islands and Mariehamn are fine for maps and messages. Outer skerries and some boat crossings drop out. Download offline maps and the ferry timetable before you leave the harbour.
Only if the plan is regional and lists both countries. A Finland/Åland plan stops when you step back onto a Swedish quay. Many visitors pair a Finland plan for the islands with a separate Sweden profile for Stockholm.
112, same as Finland. Operators can take Swedish, Finnish, or English. Save it before you bike out of Mariehamn; the archipelago is not a place to discover you stored a Swedish 112-only note that assumes you are still in Stockholm.
Plany eSIM
You want data when the ferry doors open in Mariehamn, not after a hunt for a kiosk that does not exist on the quay the way it would at Helsinki Airport. Install an eSIM that lists Finland — Åland uses Finnish numbering — before you board in Stockholm or Turku.
Viking Line and Eckerö apps, bus PDFs, and the next island boat all live on the phone. Ålcom and Finnish-linked towers cover Mariehamn well; a Sweden-only plan is the one that can quietly fail in the harbour.
