Nelson's Dockyard is a morning, not a drive-by photo
Walk the yard, look at the sail lofts, then swim at Galleon Beach. Treating English Harbour as a cruise-ship selfie stop misses the reason the south coast is the interesting half of Antigua.
English Harbour, Barbuda's pink sand, XCD, and eSIM data from V.C. Bird so you skip the ANU SIM counter after Carnival or a dockyard day.
Bezpieczne, skuteczne i prywatne eSIM-y na całym świecie
Antigua is English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard — a UNESCO yard of Georgian naval buildings and sailing masts — plus a ring of beaches that change personality every few coves. Barbuda is the other island: Codrington, a frigate-bird sanctuary, and the long pink sand that is not a taxi ride from your St. John's hotel. Carnival in late July and early August is when the capital becomes a costume and soca timetable.
East Caribbean dollars (XCD) are official; US dollars appear on resort folios. Privately owned buses (the old 'ABC' habit) and taxis move Antigua; Barbuda is a flight or ferry decision, not a bridge. Eat ducana, fungi, and pepperpot; drink the local rum at a rum shop that is not on the cruise-ship circuit.
V.C. Bird International (ANU) is the arrival. Flow and Digicel cover St. John's and the south-coast hotels more thickly than Barbuda's quieter roads. An eSIM that is live at the jetway means the Dockyard taxi and the Barbuda Air or ferry message are not a hunt for airport Wi-Fi behind a Carnival weekend queue.

Flights and boats cancel. The pink sand and the frigate colony need a buffer night in Codrington if you are serious. A 'we will just go' plan is how people spend the day in St. John's traffic instead.
Late July into August, routes and rooms follow the mas camps and the last lap. If you did not book for Carnival on purpose, do not arrive as if it were a quiet shoulder week.
You hail a privately owned bus, pay in XCD, and say English Harbour or All Saints. It is not a TfL card tap. Missing that is how visitors overpay for taxis they did not need.
Sweet potato dumpling and cornmeal with fish is the Antiguan tell. If the menu only speaks Jamaican, you are in a tourist loop. Pepperpot on a Saturday is the other local clock.

English Harbour earns a full day if you close it on the ridge: rum at the Dockyard, then the Sunday barbecue and reggae at Shirley Heights as the light goes. A drive-by at noon is a different place. Fig Tree Drive and a roti in town can fill the hours between.

First-timers get pointed at Dickenson Bay, Jolly Harbour, or English Harbour, and told to keep St. John's for a morning when the cruise berths are empty. The capital on a ship day is shopping traffic, not the island you came for. Use a taxi from the Dockyard if you only have one urban hour.

It is the same country, so a country plan should be allowed to attach on both islands. Coverage on Barbuda is simply thinner. Download maps before you hop, and do not treat Codrington like St. John's for signal.
ANU kiosks exist and get busy after holiday flights. An eSIM installed at home is online for the taxi and Carnival meetup pins. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20 and newer can hold that profile without the desk.
Over open water you may lose the tower. That is normal. Have the operator's booking offline and pick up data again in Codrington.
For the hotel folio, often no. For buses, rum shops, and market fruit, yes. Find an ATM in St. John's while you still have data.
Only if the plan lists those places. They are different countries and networks. A regional Caribbean eSIM is the product to compare, not a hope that 'the islands' share one profile.

V.C. Bird (ANU) after a Carnival weekend is a queue, not a relaxing SIM counter. Install an eSIM before you fly and the Dockyard taxi, the villa WhatsApp, and the Barbuda hop are already on the phone.
Flow and Digicel shops in St. John's can add a local number later. For a week that splits English Harbour and a Barbuda night, prepaid data that works on both islands — when the towers do — is the piece you want before you leave home.
