Copán is a town, then a site
Stay in Copán Ruinas, walk to the ruins in the morning, look at the hieroglyphic stairway like you have time. The macaws are not a special effect.
Copán ruins, Roatán reefs, lempiras, chicken buses, and an eSIM for Bay Islands ferry days.

Honduras is two holidays wearing one passport: a Maya city at Copán where macaws still argue in the trees, and a Caribbean island week on Roatán or Utila where the conversation is tanks, reef and whether the ferry is running. In between are highlands, a lake that does a good Sunday lunch, and chicken buses that will take you if you let them.
Eat baleadas — the flour tortilla that is the country's true infrastructure — plus seafood on the islands and something grilled in the interior. The lempira is cash outside the resort desk. Spanish is the language; island English appears in dive shops. A first trip is Copán plus one island, or the islands alone if the reef is the whole point. Do not treat San Pedro Sula as a sightseeing city unless you have a specific reason.
Utila is the backpacker scuba rumour. Roatán is the longer beach and the tighter timetable. Copán Ruinas the town is cobbles and a day at the site, not a theme park. Give each piece the nights it asks for. The van between worlds is long enough that you will want a book and a downloaded show.

Stay in Copán Ruinas, walk to the ruins in the morning, look at the hieroglyphic stairway like you have time. The macaws are not a special effect.
The crossing costs hours you will want underwater. Utila is compact and dive-obsessed. Roatán is bigger, with west-end ease and more room to not dive.
Find the stand with a line of workers, not a laminated photo menu on the highway. One or two filled tortillas is a meal, not a snack you failed.
Schedules move. Weather moves them more. Screenshot the ticket and the operator chat. Have a night of slack if a flight is the backup.
Island dive shops hide the card fees in the quote. Small towns want notes. Withdraw in a city or a proper island ATM, decline dynamic conversion.

The afternoon catamaran from Coxen Hole is a single daily crossing. If the mainland-US flight lands after lunch, plan a Roatán night instead of sprinting immigration and a taxi to the dock.

Travelers who land in San Pedro Sula and only think in islands miss the lake and the cloud forest outside La Ceiba. Sleep there, then move; the industrial city is a transfer, not the trip.

Towns and the west end are usually fine. Dive boats and some east-island roads dip. Download the ferry PDF before you leave the mainland.
Only if Honduras is listed. The Copán–Antigua shuttle crosses a border; a country-only plan does not.
You can. An eSIM at home has the shuttle or hotel chat working in arrivals, which is when San Pedro Sula is least fun to troubleshoot.
The town has signal. The park is a mix. A downloaded map and the museum notes are enough; the macaws do not need a livestream.
Unlocked iPhone XS, Pixel 3, Galaxy S20 and newer generally can. Confirm the plan names Honduras.
Planos eSIM
A ferry that slipped by two hours, a shuttle WhatsApp and a pin for a casa in Copán all want data when you leave the airport. A Honduras eSIM is online without a mall search for a Tigo pack after a delayed connection.
Install it before you fly. The first useful thing it does is tell you whether the island boat is real this afternoon.
