The Dominican Republic is a colonial capital that still has a neighbourhood pulse, and a resort east that can feel like a gated climate. Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial is walking, juice and history. Punta Cana is all-inclusives, beaches and a shuttle economy. They are the same country and different trips. Do not fly into one expecting the other without a transfer plan.
Pesos are the real money outside the resort bracelet. Cards work in the capital; cash still rules a lot of street life. Spanish is the country. English is the resort.

Calle El Conde and Parque Colón take small Dominican pesos, not a Punta Cana bracelet. Dollar menus on the cobbles are a tourist rate.
