Day one in Quito is altitude, not a walking tour record
Drink water, skip the victory hike up Panecillo stairs, and eat lighter than your pride wants. The historic centre will still be there tomorrow when your head is.
Dollarized mainland, 2,800m Quito, buses to Cuenca, and Galapagos as its own flight and clock — plus qualitative mobile coverage.
Ecuador prices lunch in US dollars and still feels like the Andes. Quito sits near 2,800 metres: stairs feel personal on day one, dry air cracks lips, and a night in the historic centre is not the same as a night at the coast. Guayaquil is humid, louder, and the usual springboard if the islands are the point. Cuenca is the colonial pause people stay longer than they booked.
The mainland is buses, markets and volcano weather. Otavalo is a textile day if you go for the stalls, not a staged photo. The Avenue of Volcanoes is a window, not a hike you improvise in trainers. The Amazon lodges are a different trip: river boats, rubber boots, and a phone that becomes a torch.
Galapagos is not a district of Quito. You fly from the mainland, change rules and often change clocks (the islands sit an hour behind), and you move between islands on a boat or a small hop — not a scenic drive from the capital. Park and flight logistics are their own checklist; we will not invent fees or visa lines here. Build the mainland and the archipelago as two itineraries that happen to share a passport stamp story.

Separate flights, park rules, and often a different hour on the clock. You do not 'drive to the islands.' Build buffer nights in Quito or Guayaquil around those flights.
Quitumbe and Carcelén are the Quito names that matter. Buy at the window, watch the bag hold, and do not assume a night bus is a bedroom.
Saturday is the full circus. Weekdays are calmer and still textile-heavy. Bargain like a human; the first price is a conversation, not an insult.
The bills look familiar. The coins may not. A US quarter still spends; do not reject local coins as fakes at a juice stand.

After the colonial grid, the Cuenca forum's extra is Parque Nacional Cajas. The city bus drops you on the main road; park staff point to the trails from the visitor centre. The fumes in the historic centre are a different trip.

Planners dump the equator complex when time is short — the ride out eats the day. Old Town in daylight and, if the sky is clear, the Teleférico up Pichincha do more work than a painted line in the suburbs.

Usually not. The islands are typically an hour behind the mainland and always a flight, not a drive. Park and inter-island rules are their own stack. A mainland eSIM helps UIO and GYE; do not assume the same bars on a panga.
Altitude. The city sits near 2,800 metres. Slow down, hydrate, and save the TelefériQo for when you have slept. This is not Guayaquil humidity — it is thinner air.
City maps, buses and photos: about 1–2 GB a day if you are not hotspotting a laptop. Amazon and highland days should be planned offline.
You can, with a queue after a long-haul. An eSIM has the taxi pin and the altitude reminder up before baggage.
Only on a regional plan that lists those countries. Tulcán and Huaquillas are real crossings; a country-only plan dies there.
eSIM 套餐
A bus platform at Quitumbe, a translation of a menu in Cuenca, and a weather check before a volcano day all want data. An Ecuador eSIM is online at Mariscal Sucre (UIO) or José Joaquín de Olmedo (GYE) without a kiosk lecture about dollars you already spend.
If the trip includes the islands, treat coverage as a town thing. Download maps before you leave Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal for a boat day. We will not invent a Galapagos megabit number.
