Miraflores is a timed visit, not a drive-by
Go when a transit is likely, not when you are hungry between meetings. The visitor centre is the easy version. A partial transit is the other product and a different day.
Panama City to Bocas and the Canal: balboas and dollars, when to go, traveler tips, and mobile data via eSIM.
Panama is a skyline that grew up next to a ditch that remade world shipping, a Casco Viejo of peeling balconies, and a Caribbean archipelago that runs on boats and rain. The Canal is not a metaphor — go to Miraflores or Agua Clara and watch a lock do the thing you came for. Then eat a sancocho, ride the Metro, and decide whether the rest of the week is coffee in Boquete or a water taxi in Bocas.
The balboa (PAB) is pegged to the US dollar and the dollar is what you actually spend. Type A/B, 120V. Spanish is the country; English appears in the Canal Zone habit and in tourism. The dry season on the Pacific side is roughly mid-December to April. Bocas has its own rain personality in every month that has a name.
The Metro and Uber make Panama City easy. The Darién is not a casual drive. San Blas / Guna Yala is a permitted, boat-and-island world — not a Uber from the old town. Domestic flights and long bus days stitch the rest.
A first trip is the city plus the Canal plus one other note: Bocas, Boquete or a Guna island. Trying to add Colombia by sail, a jungle lodge and Costa Rica in ten days is how you collect terminals. Stay long enough to have a favorite juice in Casco.

Stay inside the restored grid, walk at dawn, and eat where the menu is still in Spanish first. The Cinta Costera sunset is free. The rooftop with the DJ is optional.
Build a spare night. The water taxi is a swell decision. Arguing with the skipper does not flatten the channel between islands.
Rules, fees and which islands are open change. Go with an operator who works with Guna communities. A drone over a restricted cay is how you meet the wrong conversation.
The highlands are cool, green and a different Panama. Sleep there if you like walking. Day-tripping from the city is a long bus for a latte.

Miraflores has platforms and live narration when a ship is in the chamber. Check the canal authority site for transits that day; a guide repeating the loudspeaker is the redundant product. A partial transit on the water is a different day and a different ticket.

First-timers get sent to the colonial wreck and the craft market next door, then back to Casco for plazas and the Canal museum in the old Grand Hotel. Go early, before the heat, and do not treat the two as the same walk.

Some US plans include Panama; many visitor plans do not. If you are not on a US carrier, assume you need data. Unlocked iPhone XS / Pixel 3 / Galaxy S20+ take a Panama eSIM either way.
Bocas towns are patchy-to-okay. Many Guna cays and the boat ride are not. Screenshot the pickup and the lodge pin before you leave the last dock with a tower.
City maps, Uber and island WhatsApp: 1–2 GB a day, so about 10–15 GB for ten days. Hotspotting a laptop in Casco cafés pushes you up.
You can, with ID. An eSIM means the first Uber is a tap. The airport is a long hall; the errand is optional.
Only if those countries are listed. The Paso Canoas border and a sail to Cartagena are close in travel talk. A country-only plan is not a Central America pass.
eSIM 套餐
Uber from PTY, a Metro map, and a pin for a Casco walk-up without a doorman: Panama City assumes you are online. An eSIM is live in arrivals without a mall kiosk after a long-haul that already took the evening.
Install it before you fly. The island boat will not wait while you register a prepaid in a shop that closed for lunch.
